Jordanians vote for newly empowered parliament

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? Jordanians voted Wednesday for a parliament touted to be the most powerful in the kingdom's history, but with much of the opposition boycotting it is unclear how far the vote and its accompanying reforms will go to pacify a two-year long wave of protests.

At least 125,000 Jordanians, or 5 percent of the 2.3 million who registered to vote, cast ballots in the first two hours after polls opened despite technical computer problems with the balloting, elections commission head Abdul-Illah Khatib said. That is reasonably heavy turnout for the early morning.

King Abdullah II has given the parliament the right to choose the prime minister, previously appointed by the crown. It is one of several major reforms that will see the elected legislature take over much of the responsibility for day-to-day affairs of state, although the king ? for now ? will still set broader foreign and security policy.

The 2011 Arab Spring uprisings in the region set off a wave of demonstrations in Jordan, albeit much smaller than those that toppled autocratic leaders in Egypt, Libya, Yemen and Tunisia and devolved into a bloody civil war in Syria. Abdullah is trying to control the pace of change.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour told reporters that the vote was a "a stepping stone, or a station, on the path of more vigorous, serious, real and genuine reforms," as he cast his ballot in his northwestern hometown of Salt.

"More democracy is coming," added Ensour, who is expected to tender his resignation to the king shortly after the vote as Jordan's last appointed premier. Officials said Ensour will remain a caretaker until parliament elects his successor.

But government critics, led by the powerful Muslim Brotherhood, say the king's moves do not go far or fast enough to end his monopoly on power.

The Islamist group is boycotting the vote, as are four smaller parties, including communists and Arab nationalists, on grounds that an electoral law introduced last year favored pro-king loyalists and undercut votes in its favor.

The Islamists' frustration is growing because the Brotherhood has not been able to rally a large sector of the public to their side. Though there is anger over the economy, rising prices and corruption, many Jordanians also distrust the Brotherhood, eyeing its rise in Egypt and fearing it could grab power in Jordan and throw it into instability.

"It's a national wedding in Jordan, with the bride being the new parliament," said Amman housewife Basma Edwan, 32, as she enthusiastically cast her ballot, beaming a smile at photographers inside the polling room.

Outside the Amman polling station, convenience store cashier Mohammed Abu-Summaqa, 21, said he will not be voting.

"Deputies will not be able to do anything for us because they are controlled by the king and Cabinet, so why should I vote?" he asked.

Car accident triggers unrest in Azerbaijan town

BAKU, Azerbaijan (AP) ? It began late at night with a minor car accident.

By midday Thursday, a hotel had been burned to the ground, several expensive vehicles torched and crowds were facing off with police to demand a leading regional official's resignation.

The episode has exposed latent tensions nurtured by economic inequality and unresponsive governance in the oil-abundant Azerbaijan. The ostentatious display of wealth and aggressive, arrogant behavior among well-connected individuals is commonplace across resource-rich former Soviet republics and engenders much bitterness.

That appears to have served as the spark for the unrest in Ismayilli, a resort town of 15,000 people beside a hilly nature reserve 175 kilometers (110 miles) from the capital, Baku.

Trouble began Wednesday night when the owner of a local hotel, 22-year-old Emil Shamsaddinov, reacted to his Chevrolet Camaro sports car veering onto a sidewalk and colliding with an electricity pole by getting into a fight with another motorist.

The person Shamsaddinov fought with was parked by the side of the road in a Soviet-era Zhiguli, the ubiquitous model favored for cheapness rather than quality.

Shamsaddinov, who police said may have been drunk, berated and swore at onlookers, prompting an angry reaction from a group of Ismayilli's residents.

The dispute quickly escalated, leading to around 3,000 people raiding Shamsaddinov's Chyrag hotel ? the name of the hotel means "fire" in Azeri ? and setting alight several of his cars, which included the Camaro, a Chevrolet Niva and a Hummer.

Police, who took Shamsaddinov and his passenger into custody, say the rampage lasted about four hours.

In amateur video of burning vehicles and buildings uploaded to the Internet, people in the crowd are heard laughing and cheering.

The mob then directed its ire at the son of the Ismayilli district chief, whose house they also attacked. There they set fire to a Toyota Land Cruiser and two motorcycles.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Azerbaijan service, which is funded by the U.S. Congress, cited local residents as saying Shamsaddinov's hotel was being used for prostitution and that local authorities had failed to heed requests for it to be closed.

On Thursday, despite an increased security presence in the town, hundreds of people went back onto the streets and surrounded a regional government building and demanded the regional governor resign.

Independent news agency Turan reporter Aziz Kerimov told The Associated Press by telephone from Ismayilli that police fired tear gas and water cannons at half-hour intervals as the crowd refused to disperse.

Some in the crowd responded to police appeals for them to leave the area by throwing rocks. Between 10 and 15 people were detained by early afternoon, Kerimov said.

Calm had returned to Ismayilli by the evening, although the anger may not have subsided.

Kerimov quoted people in Ismayilli as saying they want to repeat the scenario that played out in another town last year, when a regional official was forced to step down in the wake of violent clashes.

Baku, Azerbaijan's capital, has in recent years become a glamorous playground for the country's elite, but oil revenue is unevenly distributed among the mainly Muslim country's 9 million people, and average monthly salaries stand around $450. That has nurtured frustration.

Business is often perceived in Azerbaijan as operating in intimate collusion with the government, which opposition activists argue is riddled with corruption.

Berlin-based Transparency International ranked Azerbaijan 139th out of 176 countries in its 2012 Corruption Perception Index. Opposition parties and independent journalists are routinely harassed by the authorities.

This is the second major instance of public disorder in the authoritarian former Soviet nation in only a few days.

On Saturday, market traders blocked a highway 50 kilometers (30 miles) outside Baku and clashed with riot police in a spontaneous protest over increased rent for their stalls.

A week before that, in Baku itself, hundreds of demonstrators gathered in a central square to protest the death of a military conscript earlier this month. The demonstration was broken up by police. That rally was organized through social media, not by established opposition parties ? an indication that opposition to the government is increasingly being propelled by grass-roots activism.

Authorities are particularly anxious about any signs of public discontent in view of this October's presidential election, which is expected to see incumbent Ilham Aliyev retain his iron grip over the Caspian Sea nation.

Regional officials are appointed by the president, who on Thursday was attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

LONDON (Reuters) - LONDON, Jan 23 (Reuters) - The number of Britons claiming unemployment benefit posted a surprise fall in December to the lowest since mid-2011, in a rare show of strength from an economy flirting with another recession.

Bank of England policymakers have growing doubts about the value of restarting the central bank's programme of asset purchases, minutes of the central bank's January 9-10 policy meeting showed on Wednesday.

Also there's a six month lag normally between changes in the labour market and changes in GDP, so you get a change in GDP, then a change in labour market takes about six months.

"You rewind six months from these months and you had very weak GDP in the first half of the year so I think that's a big issue.

ON BOE MINUTES

"On the minutes, I think one of the most interesting statements is the sterling real exchange rate is too high. I think that's a pretty interesting comment, at least, possibly trying to influence the exchange rate."

"Whilst the fourth quarter for UK activity still looks likely to come in on the negative side of the ledger, the UK labour market continues to surprise with its resilience.

"And in spite of some high profile retail failures in recent months, and large-scale job losses in the automotive sector, the UK added a surprisingly large 90K jobs in the three months to November, with the ILO unemployment count falling by 37,000 over the same period, taking the unemployment rate down to 7.7 percent.

"Simultaneous release of the Bank of England minutes for the January MPC meeting showed the same 8-1 vote for no change as in December, with David Miles still voting for a 25 billion increase in the asset purchase scheme.

"Today's labour market report probably helps the case for another "no change" decision at February's MPC meeting, though that will hang in the balance pending Friday's GDP result, which will suggest triple dip for the UK, with more members likely to join Miles in seeking an expansion in the BoE's current stance if it disappoints."

"A positive surprise with employment, rising 90,000 and the productivity puzzle continues in the UK. Output looks to be flat lining while employment is still rising, continuing the pattern of the past year.

"The UK labour market showed signs of surprising resilience at the end of last year despite the weak business cycle. In details, jobless claims fell by 12.1k in Dec from a downward revised -8.9k in Nov (previously reported at -3k).

"The outcome is much more dynamic than our expectations for a flat reading and market consensus for a slight 0.5k increase. The unemployment rate remained stable at 4.8% in Dec, in line with expectations.

"All in all, today's report shows a surprising improvement in the labour market which is at odds with the development of the real economy that - in Q4 - is expected to have contracted by 0.5 percent quarter on quarter.

"Despite the relative strength of the labour market, earnings growth continued to moderate in Nov, with the average earnings index down to 1.5 percent from 1.8 percent in October. This is a clear sign of moderate negotiation power from employees that feel the pressure of earnings growing far less than inflation."

PHILIP SHAW, INVESTEC

"The employment numbers continue to flatter to deceive. The trends in both unemployment and jobs creation are completely at odds with the weakness with much of the real economy data that are being published.

"Whilst questions will be asked about the so-called productivity puzzle, the bottom line is that a robustly performing labour market is good for confidence and good for the public finances.

ON BOE MINUTES:

"No major surprise from the MPC minutes given that there is a quarterly inflation due next month, we weren't expecting fireworks from this meeting. Our view is that the MPC will keep the overall stance of monetary policy on hold throughout this year."

J.Crew's Lyons Emerges a Swan After Childhood Disorder

Like many growing girls, Jenna Lyons was a self-perceived ugly duckling, but lately -- especially after J.Crew's colorful fashion line took center stage on the Obama girls at the inauguration this week -- she has emerged as a beautiful swan.

J.Crew's 44-year-old creative director said at Glamour's Women of the Year awards in November, "I know what it's like not to feel beautiful. ... I remember that feeling."

Stick-thin, with bold over-sized glasses and fashionably mismatched clothing, she has her own back story. Lyons was born with Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome or incontinentia pigmenti (IP), a genetic disorder that can cause skin scarring, loss of hair and malformed teeth. She has said she wears dentures.

In its most severe form, the genetic disorder can affect the central nervous system, causing seizures, learning disabilities and mental retardation, according to the Incontinentia Pigmenti International Foundation (IPIF), a nonprofit that supports research into the disorder.

Fortunately for Lyons, she has the milder form, which only discolors skin on the trunk. In some women it is so mild, it is never even diagnosed.

But IP can be deadly serious. Because it is an X-linked genetic mutation, it nearly always kills boys in utero. Males do not have a second X chromosome to overcompensate for the mutation, which attacks their immune systems.

In girls, there can be potential vision problems, including crossed eyes, cataracts or blindness.

Emily Batista, an 18-year-old who made a film about IP, "My Skin," at Brooklyn College in New York, said the psychological effects are just as traumatizing.

She has dark patches all over her body and missing teeth.

"IP was a struggle for me when I was younger," she said. "I got bullied a lot about my appearance. I never knew if I had a place in the world or if I was just that kid that would get picked on forever, but with a few good friends and as time went on I learned that we all mature and people really don't care about my appearance."

Like Lyons, Batista had dental surgery, but said, "the pain will be worth it in the end when I have the smile I dreamed of having as a kid."

Suzanne Emmerich, founder and executive director of the IP foundation, told ABCNews.com that she hoped Lyons would also come out as a spokeswoman to bring awareness to the disorder.

Even if a milder case of IP is not life-threatening, women can be carriers and have a daughter with the devastating health consequences.

"I hear from a lot of young people who say they don't know anyone else with IP and they feel so isolated," said Emmerich, who wrote an email to Lyons asking her to get involved in the nonprofit foundation. "They need someone to identify with -- someone who deals with Michelle Obama, you couldn't get higher than that."

Lyons has addressed overcoming her earlier awkwardness in an interview with the New York Times last week. She said, "I am so not an insider, and that is O.K. I might feel like one in very particular moments. But I don't feel the same pressure I did when I was young to be part of the club. I'm not one of the cool kids, and that is totally fine."

Heather Lynch McAuliffe, vice-president of public relations for J.Crew, told ABCNews.com that Lyons would not be available for comment on her personal struggle with IP, but said, "We appreciate you approaching us with the idea."

Emmerich, a 75-year-old former fundraiser, said she founded IPIF in 1994 when her nephew's daughter was born with the disorder, but had been misdiagnosed.

"This was before there were genetic tests," she said. "She had little blisters that looked like herpes, which she didn't have. She was treated with medication for six months."

Babies with IP are sometimes born with a detached retina, which is correctable with laser surgery.

"She didn't have that, but if she had, it would have been a disaster," Emmerich said. "There can also be neurological implications."

Her grandniece Gemma Stern, now 17 and a student at Tufts University, said she was "thrilled" when she learned that she had the disorder in common with fashion icon Lyons.

"It felt great to hear Jenna speak about her struggles growing up with IP because I can completely relate," she said.

Stern was self-conscious about a large bald spot on the top of her head, so when she was 10, she got a hair transplant. She has also undergone extensive dental work to correct her deformed teeth.

"Like Jenna, I have scars and discolored skin and have always been embarrassed when wearing shorts," she said. "Luckily, with age these scars have somewhat faded."

Like others, she was teased, but now in college, she said, "people are shocked when I tell them I have IP. ... I have gone to many doctors where I had to explain the disease to them."

First of all, I must thank the Seidenberg Community for the warm welcome that I have received since coming to Pace in mid-August.? I am excited to be back on the east coast to lead new initiatives and promote existing programs to flourish.? I was at MIT from 1979 to 2004. Between 2004 and 2012, I spent the academic year at the University of Arizona and the summers at MIT. ?The Seidenberg School is unique as it encompasses all aspects of Computer Science and Information Systems.

It has been a busy time at the Seidenberg School.? The Information Assurance Program?continues to be strong at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.? We have been reaccredited as a National Center of Academic Excellence:

I am instituting a new initiative on TeleHealth, based on my assessment that this is going to be the next trillion dollar industry.? Back in 2001, I proposed the notion that healthcare applications should be handled in a three pronged manner involving on-site personnel, off-site personnel, and advanced computer techniques. My ongoing research in the area of Telemedicine (?The Constitutionality of Current Legal Barriers to Telemedicine in the United States: Analysis and Future Directions of Its Relationship to National and International Health Care Reform,?(with D. Sao), Health Matrix: Journal of Law-Medicine?, 11, 2011.), coupled with my research focusing on distributed teams and the concept of a 24 hour knowledge factory Expanding the 24 Hour Workplace, Wall Street Journal,?September 15, 2007 (extended article and online podcast interview), looks at the technical, business, medical, legal, public policy, economic, and other hurdles related to this emerging field.? Torrey Pines a good gauge for Tiger

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Based on his record alone, there could be cause for alarm the way Tiger Woods started his season.

Woods never finished out of the top 10 in his season opener until his 13th season, when he was coming off reconstructive surgery on his left knee and was eliminated in the second round of the Match Play Championship.

He was eliminated on the second day of the Abu Dhabi Championship in memorable fashion ? a late rally to seemingly make the cut with one shot to spare, only to be informed that he was not supposed to get relief from an imbedded lie in sandy soil on the fifth hole. Two shots were added to his score, and Woods was on his way back with only the 10th missed cut of his career, his first outside the PGA Tour and a bad start to the year.

The more important measure, however, is this week at Torrey Pines.

Woods has won seven times as a pro on this track along the Pacific bluffs. It's a public course, but it feels as if he owns it. Such is his dominance at Torrey Pines that after the first round of the 2008 Buick Invitational, when Woods opened with a 67 on the South Course, a caddie standing behind the 18th green said, "He just won two tournaments with one round." Sure enough, Woods won that week by eight shots, and then won the U.S. Open that summer on a mangled knee in a playoff.

That was his 14th ? and at the moment, his last ? major championship.

That also was his last win at Torrey Pines.

He didn't play in 2009 because he was still recovering from knee surgery. He didn't play in 2010 because he was recovering from the humiliating collapse in his personal life. The last time he played Torrey Pines was in 2011, which turned out to be the worst season of his career. He was embarking on a brand new swing, his game was a wreck and it showed. Woods went 74-75 on the weekend and tied for 44th.

Where is he now?

"It's nice to be healthy, to be able to train and practice and do all of the things that I know I can do," Woods said Tuesday after playing the back nine on the South Course. "It's definitely a very different feeling, so it's nice to be back. It's nice to get out there and play a course that I know."

When it comes to horses for courses, Woods is a thoroughbred at Torrey Pines. The only course comparable to his success level at Torrey would be Firestone, where he also has won seven times and never finished out of the top 10 until 2010 and 2011, both times when his game was a mess. He has won seven times at Bay Hill, but that's different from the other two because Woods has seven finishes out of the top 10. Bay Hill always has been feast or famine.

"This has always been a pretty good benchmark, hasn't it?" Geoff Ogilvy said.

If he doesn't win this week, it certainly wouldn't be a disaster. Woods is getting older, and the competition is getting deeper every year. Winning is not as easy as it was.

But how he plays this week could be a fair measure of his game going into a pivotal year when the balance of power has shifted to 23-year-old Rory McIlroy. Woods talks a lot about the courses where he feels most comfortable, with Torrey Pines and Firestone at the top of his list. He also includes Augusta National and St. Andrews.

Most telling was his last win at Torrey Pines.

He was runner-up at the Masters that year, and then had arthroscopic surgery to repair some cartilage damage in his left knee that caused him to miss Quail Hollow and The Players Championship. He was getting ready for the U.S. Open when doctors found two stress fractures of the left tibia and recommended six weeks off, which he ignored.

So when he showed up at Torrey Pines, the opening round was the first time he had walked 18 holes since the final at the Masters.

Of his 14 majors, this was among the most remarkable, foremost because of the injury.

"Here I am just talking about it and my hands are sweating just thinking about the feeling I had to get through each and every day," Woods said Tuesday. "Just trying to get up and having to warm up again and go to the gym. I just don't want to move. Then having to get out here and warm up and trying not to show you guys and any of my competitors what I was feeling. It was a very difficult week."

But it was at Torrey Pines.

Could he have won the U.S. Open in that kind of physical shape had it been played anywhere else?

"Yeah," he said.

But did it help that it was Torrey Pines?

"Yeah, definitely. Probably those three courses I just mentioned," he said, referring to Torrey, Firestone and Augusta.

Woods won a Junior World Championship at Torrey Pines as a teenager. He first came to the course with his father for the Andy Williams Invitational, spending most of his time watching the California players ? Mark O'Meara, John Cook, Corey Pavin. He recalled seeing Andy Bean reach the par-5 18th in two shots.

It's different now. The world watches him. That much was evident when he finished the 18th hole of a practice round on a cool, quiet morning. The golf course, which had been so quiet, came to life with a few hundred rushing over to a walkway with hopes of an autograph, and the pounding of steps heard on a bridge as two dozen photographers trampled behind him.

McIlroy is taking the next month off. The field at Torrey Pines includes Dustin Johnson, Masters champion Bubba Watson, defending champion Brandt Snedeker, Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson. But it's still Torrey Pines. This is where a healthy and happy Woods is usually at his best.

Construction workers battle cold weather

CLEVELAND - Drivers traveling through the intersection of St. Clair Avenue and East 45th Street in downtown Cleveland Tuesday morning had to feel bad for a group of construction workers who were working out in the frigid elements.

Workers for Terrace Construction, bundled from head to toe, completed a sewer repair that could not wait.

"Today is the coldest day in a long time," said worker Ed Zacharias.

Zacharias, a 12-year veteran construction worker used to working in the elements all-year-round, said Tuesday's arctic weather still came as a surprise to him and his co-workers.

While dressing for the weather was important, Zacharias stressed for him, it was important not to over do it.

"The key is you do not want to wear too much," shared Ed. "You wear too much and you start to sweat underneath. As long as you stay moving, you stay busy, you'll stay warm enough.

LG has just announced plans to roll out its latest flagship, the Optimus G, globally to 50 new countries. Coming first to Singapore at the end of January and to dozens of other countries afterwards, this model of the Optimus G will have LTE connectivity onboard in any country that supports it. Interestingly enough, the press release stipulates that the Optimus G heading out globally will also be running "the latest Jelly Bean OS and improved software," a huge upgrade from the original devices that ran Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box. That said, Android 4.2 isn't specifically mentioned, so it wouldn't surprise us in the least if we see Android 4.1 instead.

Obama officially signs Cabinet nominations

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama has signed documents officially submitting top administration nominations to the Senate.

In a traditional inauguration signing ceremony in the U.S. Capitol after he took the oath of office, Obama affirmed the nominations of John Brennan to be director of the CIA, former Sen. Chuck Hagel for secretary of defense, Sen. John Kerry to be secretary of state and Jack Lew for Treasury secretary.

Obama also signed a proclamation to commemorate the inauguration. The proclamation is entitled "National Day of Hope and Resolve, 2013."

President Ronald Reagan established the tradition of visiting the Capitol's President's Room after taking the oath to sign documents and pose for photographs

A relative from the Tianyuan Cave: Humans living 40,000 years ago likely related to many present-day Asians and Native Americans

Jan. 21, 2013 ? Ancient DNA has revealed that humans living some 40,000 years ago in the area near Beijing were likely related to many present-day Asians and Native Americans.

An international team of researchers including Svante P??bo and Qiaomei Fu of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, sequenced nuclear and mitochondrial DNA that had been extracted from the leg of an early modern human from Tianyuan Cave near Beijing, China. Analyses of this individual's DNA showed that the Tianyuan human shared a common origin with the ancestors of many present-day Asians and Native Americans. In addition, the researchers found that the proportion of Neanderthal and Denisovan-DNA in this early modern human is not higher than in people living in this region nowadays.

Humans with morphology similar to present-day humans appear in the fossil record across Eurasia between 40,000 and 50,000 years ago. The genetic relationships between these early modern humans and present-day human populations had not yet been established. Qiaomei Fu, Matthias Meyer and colleagues of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, extracted nuclear and mitochondrial DNA from a 40,000 year old leg bone found in 2003 at the Tianyuan Cave site located outside Beijing. For their study the researchers were using new techniques that can identify ancient genetic material from an archaeological find even when large quantities of DNA from soil bacteria are present.

The researchers then reconstructed a genetic profile of the leg's owner. "This individual lived during an important evolutionary transition when early modern humans, who shared certain features with earlier forms such as Neanderthals, were replacing Neanderthals and Denisovans, who later became extinct," says Svante P??bo of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, who led the study.

The genetic profile reveals that this early modern human was related to the ancestors of many present-day Asians and Native Americans but had already diverged genetically from the ancestors of present-day Europeans. In addition, the Tianyuan individual did not carry a larger proportion of Neanderthal or Denisovan DNA than present-day people in the region. "More analyses of additional early modern humans across Eurasia will further refine our understanding of when and how modern humans spread across Europe and Asia," says Svante P??bo.

Parts of the work were carried out in a new laboratory jointly run by the Max Planck Society and the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing.

I saw this quote, ?You cannot build fitness on dysfunction? ~ Gray Cook?, on a client?s site in the fitness industry.

We had a very healthy dialogue and I mentioned this quote buried within their site and why it resonated with me.

Immediately, I converted it to the general fitness of a business, as I have periodically encountered ?dysfunction? within clients and prospective client?s business models.

Obviously if we are hired to restore function, grow sales, improve customer satisfaction and communications, we need to be able to address the ?dysfunctional? aspects first.? If a client is not wanting/willing to address these concerns, I feel professionally tied and unable to move them to health and vitality, and therefore recommend they choose another ?doctor?.

The problem typically does not require radical change and is a relatively easy fix in our view.? A good example is when a client requests that we generate more customers and we discover that their current clients are not being properly cared for. ?We?d recommend that they take a look at their entire customer life cycle and resolve any issues, before they move forward and grow.

The ?Fix? may be creating systems, enabling proper and consistent follow through, training or retraining a current staff member of their team.? The main point is that more sales is not always the answer.

I?ve found that there is typically ?dysfunction? at some level and to some degree with all companies, mine included.? The real value comes in determining if it critically affects your internal team and becomes rampant and/or affects your clients in a critical way.? I don?t think we need a degree to figure out what the root cause is and have the will to resolve, heal and come from a place of health.

Maybe start with a few questions:? why am I here?? What?s the purpose of this business?? Who do we serve and how do we serve them best?? Is this situation effecting the positive outcome to those answers and if so, what do I need to do to resolve it.

My challenge to you is to pick an area of dysfunction within your business and restore it to health.? I?m going to do the same.

Musial, Weaver were very different

One was born in St. Louis, the other became a star there.

Aside from that, Earl Weaver and Stan Musial were about as different as two Hall of Famers could be.

"Talk about your odd couple," said George Vecsey, the longtime sports columnist for The New York Times who wrote a recent biography of Musial.

Weaver was a 5-foot-6 rabble rouser whose penchant for quarreling with umpires belied a cerebral approach to managing that has stood the test of time. Musial was a humble slugger with a funky batting stance who was beloved by Cardinals fans and respected by pretty much everyone else.

Saturday began with news of Weaver's death at age 82, and by the end of the night Musial had died, too, leaving baseball to reflect on two distinguished careers rich in contrasts.

"Earl was well known for being one of the game's most colorful characters with a memorable wit, but he was also amongst its most loyal," Commissioner Bud Selig said.

Selig later released a statement after Musial's death at age 92.

"Stan's life embodies baseball's unparalleled history and why this game is the national pastime. As remarkable as `Stan the Man' was on the field, he was a true gentleman in life," Selig said.

A three-time MVP and seven-time National League batting champion, Musial helped the Cardinals win three World Series championships in the 1940s. His popularity in St. Louis can be measured by the not one, but two statues that stand in his honor outside Busch Stadium. After his death Saturday, Cardinals of more recent vintage began offering condolences almost immediately.

"Sad to hear about Stan the Man, it's an honor to wear the same uniform," said a message posted on the Twitter account of Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday.

Albert Pujols, who led St. Louis to World Series titles in 2006 and 2011 before leaving as a free agent before last season, offered prayers for Musial's family via Twitter.

"I will cherish my friendship with Stan for as long as I live," said a message posted on Pujols' site. "Rest in Peace."

Weaver was born in St. Louis, but his greatest success came as a manager in Baltimore. He took the Orioles to the World Series four times, winning one title in 1970.

Never a fan of small-ball strategies like bunting and stealing bases, Weaver preferred to wait for a three-run homer, always hoping for a big inning that could break the game open.

"No one managed a ballclub or pitching staff better than Earl," said Davey Johnson, who played under Weaver with the Orioles.

Johnson now manages the Washington Nationals and ran the Orioles from 1996-97.

"He was decades ahead of his time," Johnson said. "Not a game goes by that I don't draw on something Earl did or said. I will miss him every day."

While Musial could let his bat do the talking, Weaver was more than willing to shout to be heard. His salty-tongued arguing with umpires will live on through YouTube, and Orioles programs sold at the old Memorial Stadium frequently featured photos of Weaver squabbling.

Former umpire Don Denkinger remembered a game in which the manager disputed a call with Larry McCoy at the plate.

"Earl tells us, `Now I'm gonna show you how stupid you all are.' Earl goes down to first base and ejects the first base umpire. Then he goes to second base and ejects the second base umpire. I'm working third base and now he comes down and ejects me," Denkinger said.

Musial was a quieter type who spent his career far removed from the bright lights of places like New York and Boston. But his hitting exploits were certainly on par with contemporaries Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams.

"I knew Stan very well. He used to take care of me at All-Star games, 24 of them," Hall of Famer Willie Mays said. "He was a true gentleman who understood the race thing and did all he could. Again, a true gentleman on and off the field - I never heard anybody say a bad word about him, ever."

Dave Anderson of The New York Times recalled growing up in Brooklyn, rooting for Musial. Those Dodgers crowds helped give Musial his nickname, Stan the Man.

"I thought he was going to knock the fence down in Brooklyn, he'd hit it so often," Anderson said.

Musial did it despite an odd left-handed stance - with his legs and knees close together, he would cock the bat near his ear and twist his body away from the pitcher before uncoiling when the ball came.

If that was a lasting snapshot of Musial, the images of Weaver will stay just as fresh - the feisty manager, perhaps with his hat turned backward, looking up at an umpire and screaming at him before kicking dirt somewhere and finally leaving the field.

None of those histrionics should obscure the fact that in the end, Weaver often had the last laugh - to the tune of a .583 career winning percentage.

"When you discuss our game's motivational masters, Earl is a part of that conversation," Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson said. "He was a proven leader in the dugout and loved being a Hall of Famer. Though small in stature, he was a giant as a manager."

Regional vote to offer clues to Merkel future

BERLIN (AP) ? Chancellor Angela Merkel is riding high in polls as she seeks a third term at the head of Europe's biggest economy. But a major state election this weekend may lift her center-left rivals' hopes of defying the odds and ousting Germany's leader.

Surveys show Merkel's conservative Christian Democrats leading in the polls in Lower Saxony, where voters choose a new state legislature Sunday. But the chancellor's party is unlikely to win an outright majority needed to form a new state government without the help of its coalition partners, the pro-market Free Democrats.

And that could spell trouble for Merkel.

The Free Democrats, who are also a part of the national coalition, have been losing so much support they may not win the necessary 5 percent to gain seats in the Lower Saxony legislature, an outcome that could drag the ruling coalition to defeat.

The situation mirrors a vulnerability Merkel herself may face in September when voters nationwide choose a new Parliament, which in turn selects the chancellor.

With six major parties competing for votes, German governments are invariably formed by coalitions. And Merkel's personal popularity may not be enough to overcome the weakness of the Free Democrats.

That's why so much attention has been directed at the vote in Lower Saxony, a northwestern region of 8 million people. The Sunday balloting is one of only two significant electoral tests before national parliamentary elections.

Recent polls in Lower Saxony show the Social Democrats and Greens neck-and-neck with Merkel's party and the Free Democrats. But the most recent surveys show the Free Democrats right on the 5 percent threshold.

A coalition loss in Lower Saxony would be a blow to Merkel and invigorate the center-left opposition of Social Democrats and Greens, who have been struggling to gain traction nationally.

The opposition leader in Lower Saxony, Stephan Weil, says a win would "fire up" his party and would mean that a center-left German government "will be taken seriously as an option after the national election."

Both nationally and in Lower Saxony, Merkel and her Christian Democrats have been bolstered by a relatively robust economy, low unemployment and the chancellor's hard-nosed handling of Europe's debt crisis ? roundly criticized in debt-burdened European countries but which plays well among German taxpayers.

Merkel has made clear that her economic management will be a key plank of her national campaign.

She has also profited from the stumbling performance of the Social Democrats' candidate for chancellor, Peer Steinbrueck, the former finance minister whose personal popularity lags far behind Merkel's.

Over recent weeks, Steinbrueck has drawn criticism for saying the chancellor earns too little ? adding to controversy over his own high earnings from the public-speaking circuit.

That has not helped a campaign that promises to narrow the gap between Germany's haves and have-nots. The Social Democrats and their allies, the Greens, want to introduce a mandatory national minimum wage, crack down further on tax evasion and raise some taxes ? a move that Merkel says would be bad for the economy.

Her weakness, however, lies in the Free Democrats.

The smaller party is in disarray after failing to win major tax cuts it demanded at Germany's 2009 election and taking much of the blame for persistent coalition infighting.

Gero Neugebauer, a political scientist at Berlin's Free University, said the party "has a problem, which is it doesn't have a profile that is sufficiently attractive for enough voters."

"The government's work as a whole, particularly that of the chancellor, is viewed very positively by the majority of the population," the general secretary of Merkel's Christian Democrats, Hermann Groehe, said recently.

But, he added, "the Free Democrats must ensure that they also benefit from this successful record."

If the Free Democrats stumble, party leader and vice chancellor Philipp Roesler, whose home state is Lower Saxony, is widely expected to lose his job. The party's poll ratings haven't improved since he took over in 2011.

Merkel's preference is to continue her alliance with the Free Democrats, her party's traditional partner. If the Free Democrats run poorly in September, she could try to revive her 2005-9 "grand coalition" with Steinbrueck's Social Democrats, a combination popular with voters but not with either party's rank-and-file.

The Social Democrats are more open than Merkel's coalition to pooling European countries' debt as the continent claws its way out of its financial crisis.

Nevertheless, analysts are skeptical as to how far Germany's European policy would shift with a change of power.

Economists at Deutsche Bank said in a recent research note that Merkel and Steinbrueck differ more on style than substance, and that the country's supreme court and public opinion "will continue to constrain policy."

PFT: Vilma's lawsuit against Goodell dismissed

The bounty case is now over.? Mostly.

Judge Helen G. Berrigan dismissed linebacker Jonathan Vilma?s defamation lawsuit against Commissioner Roger Goodell on Thursday.? NFL spokesman Greg Aiello announced the development on Twitter.

Goodell and the NFL had filed a motion to dismiss the case on the grounds that the Collective Bargaining Agreement prevents players from suing Goodell personally for claims of this nature.? Judge Berrigan agreed with the league that, under federal law, Vilma could not sue Goodell directly, but that any remedies must be pursued under the CBA.

Vilma claimed that Goodell told lies about the player?s involvement in the bounty case.? Even if the case had been permitted to proceed, Vilma would have been required to prove that Goodell knew that the information was false or that he acted with reckless disregard to whether the information was true of false, since Vilma is a public figure.

Vilma will have 30 days to file a notice of appeal.

Even if Vilma chooses not to continue the lawsuit, there are still a pair of loose ends in the bounty case.? Saints coach Sean Payton and former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams will at some point apply for reinstatement.? There?s no guarantee their requests will be granted.

Last month, all player suspensions were overturned by former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

UPDATE 7:20 p.m. ET:? Vilma?s lawyer, Peter Ginsberg, tells PFT that Vilma is considering his options.

DETROIT -- The most common question on the lips of onlookers who saw Cadillac unveil its flashy and fuel-sipping ELR plug-in hybrid at the auto show was: "How much?"

It's too early for General Motors execs to discuss price. The coupe won't hit showrooms for about a year. But the guessing has begun.

I've heard estimates anywhere from the low $50,000s to north of $70,000.

How could the spread be that big? Because GM could look at the decision in two very different ways:

1. Put a relatively inexpensive sticker on it -- let's say low $50,000s. That would show that GM wants to get some modest volumes from the ELR so it can continue to drive down per-unit component costs of the Volt powertrain.

2. Slap a big sticker on it -- say mid-$60,000s or higher -- to test just how rejuvenated the Cadillac brand is.

"The thing we don't know is whether getting piece-cost reduction of the Voltec drivetrain is more important to them than Cadillac's image enhancement," says Jim Hall, principal of research firm 2953 Analytics Inc. in suburban Detroit.

I'm betting on the latter: an eye-popping sticker meant to convey exclusivity.

Sure, critics will scoff at a mid- or high-$60,000s price and deride the ELR as a dressed-up Volt.

But Caddy execs believe they have a combination of bold styling, interior luxury and unique powertrain that rivals can't match. And I'll bet they price it accordingly.
