Looking beyond space and time to cope with quantum theory

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? Physicists have proposed an experiment that could force us to make a choice between extremes to describe the behaviour of the Universe.

The proposal comes from an international team of researchers from Switzerland, Belgium, Spain and Singapore, and is published October 28 in Nature Physics. It is based on what the researchers call a 'hidden influence inequality'. This exposes how quantum predictions challenge our best understanding about the nature of space and time, Einstein's theory of relativity.

"We are interested in whether we can explain the funky phenomena we observe without sacrificing our sense of things happening smoothly in space and time," says Jean-Daniel Bancal, one of the researchers behind the new result, who carried out the research at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. He is now at the Centre for Quantum Technologies at the National University of Singapore.

Excitingly, there is a real prospect of performing this test.

The implications of quantum theory have been troubling physicists since the theory was invented in the early 20th Century. The problem is that quantum theory predicts bizarre behaviour for particles -- such as two 'entangled' particles behaving as one even when far apart. This seems to violate our sense of cause and effect in space and time. Physicists call such behaviour 'nonlocal'.

It was Einstein who first drew attention to the worrying implications of what he termed the "spooky action at a distance" predicted by quantum mechanics. Measure one in a pair of entangled atoms to have its magnetic 'spin' pointing up, for example, and quantum physics says the other can immediately be found pointing in the opposite direction, wherever it is and even when one could not predict beforehand which particle would do what. Common sense tells us that any such coordinated behaviour must result from one of two arrangements. First, it could be arranged in advance. The second option is that it could be synchronised by some signal sent between the particles.

In the 1960s, John Bell came up with the first test to see whether entangled particles followed common sense. Specifically, a test of a 'Bell inequality' checks whether two particles' behaviour could have been based on prior arrangements. If measurements violate the inequality, pairs of particles are doing what quantum theory says: acting without any 'local hidden variables' directing their fate. Starting in the 1980s, experiments have found violations of Bell inequalities time and time again.

Quantum theory was the winner, it seemed. However, conventional tests of Bell inequalities can never completely kill hope of a common sense story involving signals that don't flout the principles of relativity. That's why the researchers set out to devise a new inequality that would probe the role of signals directly.

Experiments have already shown that if you want to invoke signals to explain things, the signals would have to be travelling faster than light -- more than 10,000 times the speed of light, in fact. To those who know that Einstein's relativity sets the speed of light as a universal speed limit, the idea of signals travelling 10,000 times as fast as light already sets alarm bells ringing. However, physicists have a getout: such signals might stay as 'hidden influences' -- useable for nothing, and thus not violating relativity. Only if the signals can be harnessed for faster-than-light communication do they openly contradict relativity.

The new hidden influence inequality shows that the get-out won't work when it comes to quantum predictions. To derive their inequality, which sets up a measurement of entanglement between four particles, the researchers considered what behaviours are possible for four particles that are connected by influences that stay hidden and that travel at some arbitrary finite speed.

Mathematically (and mind-bogglingly), these constraints define an 80-dimensional object. The testable hidden influence inequality is the boundary of the shadow this 80-dimensional shape casts in 44 dimensions. The researchers showed that quantum predictions can lie outside this boundary, which means they are going against one of the assumptions. Outside the boundary, either the influences can't stay hidden, or they must have infinite speed.

Experimental groups can already entangle four particles, so a test is feasible in the near future (though the precision of experiments will need to improve to make the difference measurable). Such a test will boil down to measuring a single number. In a Universe following the standard relativistic laws we are used to, 7 is the limit. If nature behaves as quantum physics predicts, the result can go up to 7.3.

So if the result is greater than 7 -- in other words, if the quantum nature of the world is confirmed -- what will it mean?

Here, there are two choices. On the one hand, there is the option to defy relativity and 'unhide' the influences, which means accepting faster-than-light communication. Relativity is a successful theory that researchers would not call into question lightly, so for many physicists this is seen as the most extreme possibility.

The remaining option is to accept that influences must be infinitely fast -- or that there exists some process that has an equivalent effect when viewed in our spacetime. The current test couldn't distinguish. Either way, it would mean that the Universe is fundamentally nonlocal, in the sense that every bit of the Universe can be connected to any other bit anywhere, instantly. That such connections are possible defies our everyday intuition and represents another extreme solution, but arguably preferable to faster-than-light communication.

"Our result gives weight to the idea that quantum correlations somehow arise from outside spacetime, in the sense that no story in space and time can describe them," says Nicolas Gisin, Professor at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and member of the team.

The researchers that carried out the work, in addition to Dr Bancal and Prof Gisin, are Dr Stefano Pironio from the Free University of Bruxelles in Belgium, Professor Antonio Ac?n from the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) in Barcelona, Dr Yeong-Cherng Liang from the University of Geneva, and Professor Valerio Scarani from the Centre for Quantum Technologies and the Department of Physics of the National University of Singapore.

Threats of dismissal breaking SAfrica's strikes

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Return to work or you're fired.

That ultimatum from South African mining companies to strikers appears to be getting the desired result, convincing thousands of workers to settle for less than their original demands in order to keep their jobs.

Labor unrest in South Africa's mines, which until recently showed little sign of abating, now appears to be tapering off in the face of employers' tough stance against wildcat strikes.

South Africa's Chamber of Mines, representing mine owners, announced Thursday that it had agreed with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) to raise gold miners' monthly salaries by up to 500 rand (about $57), in addition to a pay raise of up to 10 percent that miners got in July, weeks before wildcat strikes hit South Africa's platinum and gold mines. The raises fall far short of what most strikers are demanding: 16,000 rand (about $1,800) in monthly pay. Most miners currently earn about 4,000 rand ($500).

NUM, the majority union, is increasingly reviled by miners who charge it is too close to mine owners and is not assertively pressing for wage raises.

"We've always stuck to our guns that collective bargaining must be maintained," said Sven Lunsche, a spokesman for Gold Fields, whose threats to fire striking workers ended stoppages at three of its mines outside Johannesburg. More than 28,000 Gold Fields miners who were on strike "are now back at work or have been dismissed," Lunsche said Thursday, adding that 7,300 of the 8,100 mineworkers who were still striking early this week have now appealed after being fired.

Gold Fields became the second company to issue strikers with threats of dismissal that have been condemned by the influential Congress of South Africa Trade Unions (COSATU) as too arrogant.

Anglo American Platinum (Amplats), the first to act by firing 12,000 miners at its Rustenburg operations earlier this month, has come under fire from COSATU, which is planning a massive street march Saturday in support of the fired miners.

AngloGold Ashanti, also badly hit by wildcat strike action, Wednesday fired 12,000 workers who did not report for work at its operations outside Johannesburg, according to Alan Fine, a spokesman for the company. The company reported Wednesday that "unprotected strikes" at its Vaal River operations had ended after all the workers there responded to a "recently improved wage offer made through the industry's collective bargaining framework."

Evans Ramokga, a strike leader at the Amplats strike and one of the 12,000 dismissed workers, said Thursday that getting their jobs back was now a priority. The fired workers had expected to be paid Wednesday, Ramokga said, but there was nothing in the bank.

"We understand the consequences," he said, adding that they are now prepared to settle for 12,500 rand (about $1,400) in monthly pay.

Mpumi Sithole, a spokeswoman for Amplats, said that only about 20 percent of the company's employees are back at work. "Anglo American Platinum confirms that while it retains its stated position that it will not reinstate the 12,000 dismissed Rustenburg employees, the company has agreed with its recognized unions that it is willing to discuss their status as part of this engagement," Sithole said in a statement.

Lunsche of Gold Fields said that without taking a firm stand employers would have been up against "collective anarchy" of the sort that would have set a bad precedent for labor relations in South Africa's crucial mining sector.

At the peak of the wildcat strikes more than 80,000 workers ? representing 16 percent of the mining workforce ? stopped work in labor unrest that analysts said undermined the country's reputation in the eyes of investors. The credit rating agencies Moody's and S&P's have downgraded South Africa's credit rating, citing the impact of the strikes on the country's economic outlook. South African President Jacob Zuma said recently that strike action in gold and platinum mines had cost the country about 4.5 billion rand (more than $500 million) in lost output by mid-September.

The strikes originated in the platinum belt around Rustenburg, northwest of Johannesburg, where in August workers at Lonmin's Marikana operations staged a wildcat strike orchestrated by a less-known union. The Marikana strike was noted for violence in which up to 46 people were killed, including 34 shot dead by police on Aug. 16. The Marikana violence, the worst since the end of apartheid in 1994, is now the subject of a judicial inquiry that representatives of the deceased miners hope will end in indictments of the police and mining executives.

Illinois hoarder ordered to get rid of hundreds of birds

By Lauren Petty and Anthony Ponce, NBCChicago.com

A judge late Wednesday afternoon ordered an Aurora, Ill., man to let a city-hired crew remove hundreds of birds from his home.

Police served David Skeberdis with the order shortly after 6 p.m. He said he wanted to do the cleanup on his own because he couldn't afford the $13,000 the city would charge to capture the birds, but the judge overruled him.

"I feel bad about causing such a circus for them. I mean, I wish I would have had a little bit more control," said Skeberdis.

The homeowner estimated he has 80 birds, but Aurora police estimated there may be as many as 200 birds in the basement and approximately 100 birds between the first and second floors.

Aurora Police Chief John Lehman said the air quality of the home was unsafe because of dead birds on the premises and bird droppings that have not been cleaned up. Testing on the home showed two to 15 times the normal mold reading, according to city officials.

"I didn't realize how bad the bird doo was," Skeberdis said.? "If you saw it, you'd probably think I was crazy."

Hundreds of finches, canaries, parakeets, cockatiels and other birds?were found last week flying around the home in the 200 block of Shadybrook Lane.

Around midday Wednesday, two volunteers from the Greater Chicago Cage Bird Club showed up with cages to safely remove the remaining birds and to help the birds find new homes.?

"We are renting a storefront in Villa Park to put the birds in for short term until we can determine how healthy they are and we can place them in other places," said volunteer Diane Federl.

Skeberdis said he admits the hoarding got out of control but said he doesn't plan on seeking help for the obsession.

"I have enough psychology classes that I took in college,"?he said.

The GCCBC is a 501c3 and is looking for donations. The storefront is costing them $1,000/month and additional funds are needed to feed the birds.??Donations can be made online at GCCBC.org.

The Psychology of Waiting: 8 Factors that Make the Wait Seem ...

The Psychology of Waiting in Lines: 8 Reasons That the Wait Seems LongI?m a very impatient person, and standing in a slow-moving line drives me crazy. So, I set out to understand the psychology behind my frustration.

In my quest, I happened to read a paper by David Maister, The Psychology of Waiting Lines (PDF). The piece is aimed at people who operate stores, restaurants, doctors? offices, and other places where people fuss about being kept waiting.

Of course, most of us are the ones standing in line, not the ones controlling the line. But I was fascinated by the insight this paper provided into my own psychology of waiting.

Maister?s main point is that the actual time we?re waiting may have little to do with how long the wait feels.

Here?s a list of eight factors that make waits seem longer.

1. Unoccupied time feels longer than occupied time.

When you have something to distract yourself, time passes more quickly. Some hotels put mirrors by the elevators, because people like to look at themselves.

2. People want to get started.

This is why restaurants give you a menu while you wait, and why the orthodontist puts my daughter in the examination room twenty-five minutes before her exam actually begins.

3. Anxiety makes waits seem longer.

If you think you?ve chosen the slowest line at the drugstore, or you?re worried about getting a seat on the plane, the wait will seem longer.

4. Uncertain waits are longer than known, finite waits.

People wait more calmly when they?re told, ?The doctor will see you in thirty minutes? than when they?re told, ?The doctor will see you soon.? Maister gives an amusing illustration of a phenomenon that I?d noticed in my own life: if I arrive someplace thirty minutes early, I wait with perfect patience, but three minutes after my appointment time passes, I start to feel annoyed. ?Just how long am I going to have to wait?? I think.

5. Unexplained waits are longer than explained waits.

We wait more patiently for the pizza guy when there?s a thunderstorm than when the sky is clear.

6. Unfair waits are longer than equitable waits.

People want their waits to be fair. I get anxious, for instance, when I?m waiting on a crowded subway platform, when there?s no clear, fair way to determine who gets on the next car. The ?FIFO? rule (first in, first out) is a great rule, when it works. But sometimes certain people need attention more urgently, or certain people are more valuable customers. Then it gets trickier. Often, when people are treated out of sequence, it?s helpful to have them be served elsewhere ? e.g., people giving customer service by phone shouldn?t be in the same room as people giving service in person.

7. The more valuable the service, the longer the customer will wait.

You?ll wait longer to talk to a doctor than to talk to a sales clerk. You?ll stand in line longer to buy an iPad than to buy a toothbrush.

8. Solo waits feel longer than group waits.

The more people engage with each other, the less they notice the wait time. In fact, in some situations, waiting in line is part of the experience. During my book signings, I?ve been very gratified to have people tell me, ?I had so much fun talking to the people in line!?

Since I?ve read this paper, I?ve been far more patient about standing in line. I?m occupied (see #1) with thoughts analyzing my own experience of waiting in line!? Also, it may not always be good for us to be able to distract ourselves with our cell phones, but it sure makes the DMV easier.

?Have you found any good ways to make waiting in line more pleasant?

The Overwhelmed Factor and Staying Secure | Business Of Work

By?Denise McLaughlin, Worldwide Integrated Marketing, Xerox Enterprise Business Group

Security is a balance between people, technology, and process?you need all three working together to ensure you?ve got a handle on protecting what?s yours. Most people know the risk of a hacker is no longer reserved for government organizations with highly sensitive information or confined to computers, but we don?t want to think about the mobile device in our back pocket or the tablet where we?re downloading videos. And, too often we don?t think enough about a piece of paper lying on our desk, or something that really should be shredded before we throw it out.

Why do some people ?get it? more, while others ignore it? Perhaps there is an Overwhelmed Factor at work and some of us are more vulnerable to it.? A recent Harris Interactive survey commissioned by Xerox and McAfee (see infographic below) suggests that people in the western states are less concerned about security than east coasters.? We all know the old stereotypes that west coasters are ?chill,? and east coasters are uptight and more suspicious. Copernicus marketing research compared adults over 18 living on the eastern and western coasts of the country to each other, and discovered a variety of attitudinal and behavioral differences that do validate commonly-held perceptions.? ??Those on the Atlantic, who favor gun permits more, might have more fears of the security unknown, while those along the Pacific, who say they are a bit happier overall, might be more willing to relax about the security threat since the same survey showed they?re more likely to do arts and crafts!

Whatever the personality drivers, perhaps there is a common human factor underlying our responses. I spoke to a friend recently about the growing underground network of hackers on the world stage, and what they are doing to our data. How they are fast becoming a whole new economy. I?ve been learning from security experts at McAfee that they can siphon off unprotected data, surf through your computer like a skateboarder,? and it will be months before you even detect them, if you ever do. ?My friend shook her head, and practically blocked her ears. She said ?I just don?t want to hear about it, because if I did I?d stop doing everything.? I?d rather not know.?? Yup, the Overwhelmed Factor. ?Attackers are hoping that we will continue to believe it?s so complicated we?re never going to detect what they are doing. That?s their game plan.

No matter what drives our response, it?s up to every individual to practice good security habits,? and take a deep breath. We can be educated about security threats and take more control.? If you?re an employer, a good way to enforce your security policy is to communicate it regularly, and make it more than a written document. If you?re a parent, explain why you?ve put blocks onto your system and teach kids about never downloading at random, and have a conversation about posting confidential information about themselves.? Security practices are now a day-to-day fact of life. Do what you can to use the best supporting technology that automates security protection and policy?enforcement?whenever you can, ?and stay on top of what?s happening. Knowledge is power, so let?s use it.

Fungal meningitis outbreak isn't the first

The growing illnesses and deaths blamed on tainted pain shots from a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy may be the worst such outbreak of fungal meningitis in U.S. history -- but it?s not the first. Five people were sickened and one died in a similar outbreak in 2002.

Woman Saves Exotic Pets from Their Owners | The Arkansas Traveler

On May 14, 1996, the Boone County Sheriff?s Office received several complaints about strange noises and odors emanating from a trailer. The police could smell the scene before they could see it. When they arrived, low, deep growls of lions and higher-pitched, faster snarls of leopards and cougars greeted them. The police didn?t know what animals were making this racket. They were smart enough to keep a safe distance from the trailer and its contents.

Upon investigation, the police discovered a horrifying example of animal cruelty. The evidence suggested animals were neglected for possibly three weeks, according to reports from neighbors and officials.

The police called Tanya Smith, president and a founder of Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, to bail them out of this potentially deadly situation. The refuge provides a permanent home to abandoned, abused and neglected exotic animals with an emphasis on large cats.

The refuge houses a variety of dogs, donkeys, ducks, more than 100 big cats, seven black bears and one monkey named Goober. Most of the animals are from private owners, people who purchase a pet and then discover the responsibilities and costs are too great. Smith estimates that 90 percent of the animals come from private owners and would have been euthanized if not for the refuge.
This refuge prevents the senseless killing of dangerous predatory animals. Ostentatious purchases of exotic pets by eccentric owners have created a need for places like Turpentine Creek. Each rescue has its own story, just as each cat has its own personality. Some animals are rescued from breeding companies, such as Zeus, the vocal Siberian tiger.? Others animals belonged to private owners, like Thor the lion, who is trained for TV and public appearances.

The refuge covers approximately 500 acres; fewer than 90 of these have been developed for natural habitats. Smith is required to have permits from United States Department of Agriculture and Arkansas Game and Fish Commission to conduct her nonprofit business. Turpentine Creek is a nonbreeding facility, which means animals are not bought or sold, according to the refuge website.

Some of the cats are kept in a maze of cages on the walking tour. The thin steel bars are welded in cross patterns and reinforced with thicker frames. The heights are rarely constant, and most of the cages are connected. Any cats with behavioral problems live in solitary confinement, but socially successful cats like Zeus can share cells and travel through multiple cages.

Zeus is one of the refuge?s largest cats. His white color is a result of inbreeding, and his growl reverberates deep within the rib cage of anyone close. The large cat was laid out on the warm concrete stretching in the sun. He is the nearly the same size as the refuge?s grizzly bear, but his cat nap resembled a kittens or normal pet cat. This behavior dwarfed his stature only for the duration of the nap.

?You would be amazed if you knew how much they have in common with normal house cats,? said Ivy Cooper, full-time staff and volunteer coordinator for Turpentine Creek.

When Cooper approached the cage, she chuffed, or made a sound big cats use to communicate in a friendly or peaceful manner. Zeus slowly rose from his resting position and begin to pace while growling at Cooper. His deep voice sounded like the engine of a small plane.

Zeus was rescued from a private breeding facility in Missouri. Cooper was one of the crew that rescued Zeus.

?Seventy-two percent of our population is in natural habitats that are up to a third of an acre in size,? Cooper said. ?The rest are the units you see in the walking tour, our goal is to have all of them in natural habitats. The next to get a large habitat is our only grizzly bear, Bam Bam.?

The refuge offers stimulation, food and a clean place to stay. Some of the rescues may have one of these things but often lacks another, Cooper said. Private owners often lack the time, training or space to house an exotic animal.

Turpentine Creek employs more than 20 interns in biology and zoology, who monitor feed and clean the animals daily.

Help was on the way

?It takes a good team,? Smith said. ?Every day you have 200 eyes looking at you, and all wondering, ?How am I going to get food?? It has been hard, and I didn?t start seeing the light at the end of the tunnel until we got the interns.?

The interns come from all over the world to help and study the animals at the refuge. Some of the students from the UA have developed heating pads to help the animals adjust to the changes in climate. Others have helped to develop crash courses for exotic animal veterinary classes.

Some interns have helped shape legislation to help exotic animals. A former intern of Turpentine Creek helped create the Arkansas code that prohibits personal possession of an exotic animal unless they obtain the proper permit.

?There is nothing like working with tigers and big cats,? said John Chavez, intern. ?We do the husbandry, the food prep, feeding, tours and keeper talks ? you name it, and we do it. The only bad part about it is the anticipation, waiting to see the animals in their larger natural habitats.?

All of the more than 300 interns who have worked the refuge love animals and live on the land while working there. This love drives them to help creatures that would brutally maim or kill them if it ever got the chance. It drives them to go to horrible scenes to help rescue these animals.

The events in Boone County serve as an example of one of these horrible scenes. Eleven large cats were imprisoned and abandoned by their owner, Katherine Gordon Twist. The sounds and smells of the animals? cramped enclosure kept the police at bay until Smith and her team arrived.

Twist had eight large cats in a 20-foot horse trailer. Two others were in small cages, and one, whose name was Spitty Smitty the cougar, was in a 3-foot-tall cargo drum.

This story is repeated often on the tour of the compound. It is an example to Smith and her employees; it is one of their reasons they do what they do.

One cat of the 11 is still with the refuge today. Some died of complications from the conditions in which they were found. Others died of old age on the refuge, in a permanent home that provided a clean and warm place to sleep as well as food.

?I believe that the animals that we save deserve to live free of pain and suffering,? Smith said. ?It is this that keeps me eager to learn and to educate others about our mission.?

Shape of urine can indicate prostate issues: Characteristic shape of a man's urine can help diagnose urinary problems

ScienceDaily (Oct. 16, 2012) ? Scientists at Queen Mary, University of London have discovered that the characteristic shape of a man's urine stream could be used to help diagnose urinary problems.

The research, published Oct. 16 in PLOS ONE, is the first study to analyse the specific pattern a man's urine makes and whether it could be used to detect prostate problems.

Co-author Dr Martin Knight from Queen Mary's School of Engineering and Materials Science explained: "The characteristic shape is due to the surface tension in the urine and the elliptical shape of the urethra.

"The computer model matched perfectly to experiments in the laboratory and also with video data of human volunteers. There was an excellent correlation between the shape of the urine stream and the urine flow rate."

The medical engineers at Queen Mary used 60 healthy volunteers and 60 patients to test whether self-measurement of the shape of the urine stream could be used to predict maximum urine flow rate.

They found that a simple measurement of the characteristic shape of the flow pattern could accurately predict the maximum urine flow rate; important in the diagnosis of urinary problems such as those associated with prostate enlargement.

According to Prostate Cancer UK, about four out of every ten men over the age of 50 (40 per cent) and three out of four men in their 70s (75 per cent) have urinary symptoms that may be caused by an enlarged prostate.

Dr Knight said: "This research began as a student project when a team of urologists asked Queen Mary to come up with a simple non-invasive way of measuring urine flow rate that could be easily used at home where patient's urine flow rates are likely to be more typical than when urinating in hospital.

"The current techniques, although very accurate, are difficult or expensive to use reliably outside of the clinic. This new approach may therefore represent a useful solution to this important medical engineering problem, allowing men to easily monitor their urine flow rate."

Viral Promoting Movie - Work On the Internet

Nowadays, internet marketing campaigns are largely used by businesses for popularizing their website and business and when the same includes great videos, they can turn out to be an effective form of advertising. However, with a wide range of movies being uploaded on the World Wide Web each day, th odds are loaded against a movie going viral unless, it is really spectacular or unless it is properly promoted or optimized. There is heavy competition among movies to make them as the most viewed motion picture content and metrics for brand video content increases year after year. With their popularity, the focus of organizations on video products is on the increase these days.

Now, the question that would be arising is how to optimize your video and here it should be remembered that not all media strategies take the right path when promoting of a video pertaining to a brand. Some will have a guerrilla bent and therefore experts suggest that some behind-the-scenes gaming strategies can be followed for promotion of content in the YouTube. Some legitimate concepts like social intelligence concepts can also be applied for attaining popularity to a video. This concept of social intelligence is explained below:

When it comes to viral video campaigns for businesses, the business should have a very good knowledge about the competitors and this knowledge can be termed as business intelligence. When it comes to social intelligence, it is the knowledge possessed by a company about its customers. When the businesses are aware of the type of content that will impress their customers, they will sure be able to create the most-viewed video content. Here, for creating good captured content for advertising or marketing, businesses can get the help of companies, who have a network of video makers, who are specialized in creating the right kind of content. These companies have a wide network of makers of professional recordings in such a way that the organizations looking for good viral video campaigns can be benefited.

The recordings made by these professional firms are acting as good examples of viral marketing. With a good experience in creating appropriate videos for an organization, some of these companies have gained good popularity.
Companies, whose videos are acting as good examples of viral marketing can enable businessmen to acquire the right kind of content that can act as a good marketing tool for the business for several years to come.

Obama Vs. Romney Gallup Poll: Oct. 8 Results - Business Insider

Barack Obama

AP

President Barack Obama moved back to a 5-point lead over Mitt Romney, halting the Republican nominee's post-debate momentum. Obama now leads Romney 50 percent to 45 percent in Gallup's daily tracking poll.?

Romney had seen a big three-day post-debate move in the Gallup daily tracking poll, but today's results signal that his debate bump is beginning to level off.?

Earlier on Monday, Gallup released results of three days of post-debate, which showed that Romney had tied up the race with Obama in those three days of interviews. It also found that Romney was the biggest winner in the history of the presidential debates.?

Obama's approval rating ? which has swung wildly in recent weeks ? also ticked up to 51 percent, above the "safe" 50-percent threshold for an incumbent's re-election.

Obama also bumped back up in the Rasmussen daily tracking poll. He is now tied with Romney after trailing by 2 points on Sunday.

Not sure how to read the polls:

Thryve Offers a New, Visual Take on Tracking Your Meals [Health]

Thryve Offers a New, Visual Take on Tracking Your Meals iOS: Thryve is a new food tracking app that puts the emphasis on tracking what you eat, how much of it you're eating, and how those meals make you feel afterward, instead of just counting calories and being beholden to whatever ratio of this-to-that the latest fad diet says you should have.

Tracking calories can be a real pain, but apps that claim to track them for you without making you enter them are often highly inaccurate. Thryve takes a completely different approach. You take photos of your serving each day to build your personal "food log," you know?the kind that is proven to help you eat healthier. Enter the ingredients, and adjust a simple slider to that indicates how much of each item you ate and what your portion size was like. An hour or two later, the app pops up again and asks you how the meal made you feel.

The goal here is to demystify meal tracking from a game of numbers and boxes to fill out, and to reconnect you with what you're eating and how that food makes you feel, both physically and emotionally. For example, I know that in the mid-afternoon, if I have a carb-heavy snack, I feel terrible until dinner?it's a personal thing, not an everyone thing, so I try to avoid them and stick to vegetables instead, which make me feel more energized. That's the kind of feedback the app will offer. If you're interested?and tired of laboriously entering calories for every ingredient in your home-cooked meals?give Thryve a shot.

Wall Street falls on jitters before earnings reports

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks declined in quiet trading on Monday, pulling back from recent five-year highs as investors awaited the start of what many expect will be a weak earnings season.

Analysts forecast earnings will fall 2.4 percent from the year-ago quarter, which would mark the first decline in three years and make it difficult to justify keeping stocks near recent peaks.

The reporting season begins on Tuesday with aluminum company and Dow component Alcoa Inc , which is expected to post a break-even quarter compared with a 15-cents per share profit a year earlier. Alcoa shares were unchanged at $9.09.

"We've had a good run, and we're toward the top end of range," said Scott Wren, senior equity strategist at Wells Fargo Advisors in St. Louis. "There's very little chance for surprises in the earnings. We're going to see downward comparisons overall."

Strategists and investors say U.S. stock valuations are broadly out of sync with earnings estimates.

Trading was light as the U.S. government and the bond market were closed for the Columbus Day holiday. Volume was less than 3 billion shares with slightly more than an hour of trading left.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was down 28.92 points, or 0.21 percent, at 13,581.23. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was down 5.27 points, or 0.36 percent, at 1,455.66. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was down 22.43 points, or 0.72 percent, at 3,113.75.

Sentiment also suffered after the World Bank reduced its growth forecasts for the East Asia and Pacific region and warned the slowdown in China could worsen and last longer than many analysts expect.

The World Bank also slashed its economic growth forecasts for Russia, predicting that labor shortages in the country would force up inflation.

Europe's debt problems have contributed to weakened global growth. Euro-zone officials met on Monday to launch the region's bailout fund. At the meeting finance ministers said that Spain did not need a bailout because it was taking steps to put its finances in order.

For investors, the long-term outlook for Europe is for a drawn-out struggle to resolve debt problems. "This thing has years to play out," said Wren. "We're nowhere near the end of this in any way, shape, or form."

Recent earnings warnings from large multinationals such as FedEx Corp , Caterpillar Inc and Hewlett-Packard Co , have cited weakness in Europe and China.

"Certainly there has been a lot of downward revisions in earnings in general. Some people are predicting that we may see an overall decline in earnings, so there may be some defensive posturing and profit-taking," Peter Jankovskis, co-chief investment officer at OakBrook Investments LLC in Lisle, Illinois, said.

According to Thomson Reuters data through Monday, 91 companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 <.inx> have issued negative outlooks versus 21 positive preannouncements, for a ratio of 4.3, the weakest showing since the third quarter of 2001.

Netflix gained 10 percent to $73.26 after Morgan Stanley upgraded the video streaming company, saying it could become a global video platform.

Apple Inc shares shed 2.1 percent to $638.68 and was the biggest drag on both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 <.ndx> indexes after China Labor Watch, a rights advocate group, said that a Foxconn plant in China that makes Apple's iPhone was crippled by a strike. Foxconn, a Taiwanese company, denied the report.

UnitedHealth Group shares gained 0.6 percent to $57.69 after the health insurer said it would buy a 90 percent stake in Amil Participacoes SA , Brazil's largest healthcare company, for about $4.9 billion.

Chemicals maker TPC Group Inc said it received a buyout proposal from Innospec Inc for $721.3 million, topping an offer made by private equity firms. TPC shares jumped 4.9 percent to $45.60 while Innospec shed 2 percent to $33.65.

Increasing Revenues With Internet Marketing ? Nuve SEO Website

A lot of people and businesses have always been asking what internet marketing is and why it is vital for every business if it wants to succeed. Many definitions have offered to explain what internet marketing is in order to convince people and companies to incorporate internet marketing. Whatever the definition that people take internet marketing for should not be more important than understanding what needs to be done to make it work.

There are now billions of internet users today. The internet is even more frequented than the malls and physical shops these days. Business owners are making sure that they are able to maximize the benefits of internet marketing to give their business a boost in their revenue. These businesses are already building a strong online presence. They achieve this by creating online accounts, managing blogs, and getting more engaged in social networks.

Ecommerce is offering vast opportunities for business owners and use effective strategies to give them better edge against the competitors in their industry. But even with the many strategies and methods people can execute to improve their business online, it is important that they know how they are done properly and in a timely manner. Careful study of the strategies is necessary because, instead of giving you the advantage, these strategies can backfire and be bad for your business.

The good thing about internet marketing is that it is for everyone. Those people who are planning to start their own business but just don?t have the funds to invest, can make it happen just by promoting their businesses online.

With the significance of internet marketing to the success of a business, companies should now be investing on it instead of still setting the idea aside. Revenues will show significant increase if a company would integrate internet marketing to their organization and invest on them.

Suspicions, doubts linger after pope's butler verdict

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The swift conviction of Pope Benedict's former butler leaves lingering suspicions that he was a pawn in a much larger Vatican intrigue involving infighting in the papal court and alleged corruption at the highest levels of the Roman Catholic Church.

Despite the Vatican's desire to quickly turn the page on one of the worst scandals in its recent history, the trial of Paolo Gabriele for leaking sensitive documents has left many questions unanswered, leading some to call it a whitewash.

Gabriele's trial was concluded at lightning speed, ending on Saturday after only four hearings and it was an open secret that proceedings would end before a three-week gathering of bishops from around the world began on Sunday.

"The Vatican whitewashes it all," headlined Il Fatto Quotidiano, one of the newspapers that published material leaked by Gabriele, who had privileged access to the papal apartments.

While other commentators were less categorical about the possibility of orchestrated cover-up, most agreed that the trial left many unsolved mysteries and lingering contradictions.

"It seems to me there was a clear effort by the Vatican to keep any revelations within boundaries," said John Allen, an author of numerous books on the Catholic Church and the papacy.

"Their attempt at transparency by holding the trial in the first place was only partly successful," he told Reuters.

Gabriele was sentenced to 18 months in detention, to be served under house arrest in anticipation of a papal pardon.

The documents he leaked constituted one of the biggest crises of Pope Benedict's papacy, embarrassing the Vatican as it struggled to overcome a string of child sex abuse scandals involving clerics and mismanagement at its bank.

Gabriele told investigators he had acted because he saw "evil and corruption everywhere in the Church" and that information was being hidden from the pope.

JUDGE FAULTED

But Italy's leading newspaper, Corriere della Sera, listed 10 questions left unanswered by the trial. Chief among them was whether a simple man like Gabriele, who said he acted out of his "visceral" love for the pope and the Church, had acted alone.

In pre-trial testimony Gabriele acknowledged he had come under the influence of several Vatican officials, including a confessor to whom he gave copies of sensitive documents. The confessor later destroyed them.

Gabriele told the court that from his position he was able to see how easy it was for a man with the pope's power to be manipulated by others but said that those who influenced him could not be called "accomplices".

Some commentators faulted the judge for not pursuing other lines of questioning regarding who "influenced" the butler. One Italian television report asked why the priest confessor who received copies of documents from Gabriele and later destroyed them was not accused of aiding and abetting.

The priest's identity had been encrypted until the last day of the trial, when it was only revealed in the prosecution's summing up. The priest was not called to testify.

One court move that raised eyebrows was its decision to reject a defence request to accept as evidence the results of a separate investigation into the scandal, dubbed "Vatileaks" by Italian media, carried out by three cardinals.

The court ruled that since the cardinals' commission was appointed by the pope, who is the monarch in the Vatican City, its findings were reserved for his eyes and would remain secret.

The court heard how Gabriele, who served the pope his meals and helped him dress, photocopied sensitive documents under the nose of his immediate superiors in a small office adjacent to the papal living quarters in the Apostolic Palace.

He then hid more than 1,000 copies and original documents, including some the pope had marked "to be destroyed," among many thousands of other papers and old newspaper clippings in a huge wardrobe in the family apartment inside the Vatican walls.

A MOLE OR A LONE AGENT?

Gabriele began hoarding documents in 2006 when he started working as the pope's butler but some question why he only leaked them this year. Was he a mole awaiting orders from other Vatican officials?

As a member of the small, select group known as "the papal family", Gabriele's privileged access was such that he was one of fewer than 10 people who had a key to an elevator leading directly to the pope's apartments.

Many Vatican-watchers are sceptical that a butler could have acted totally alone and suggest he may have been forced to take the blame in order to shield bigger players inside the Holy See.

Marco Politi, author of several books on the Vatican, wrote that the court proceedings seemed like a "script where everyone was playing their role" - a firm but benevolent prosecution, a lukewarm defence and the prospect of a papal pardon.

Newspaper commentators asked if Gabriele had cut a deal with the Vatican, agreeing not to divulge much of what he knew in exchange for a papal pardon and continued employment in a low-profile job in the city-state.

One commentator wrote that the Vatican wanted to keep Gabriele on a short leash because it was horrified at the prospect of him leaving the Vatican and writing his memoirs.

Wild Africa Trek at Disney?s Animal Kingdom

Family, Travel

Posted by Christopher Parr on Sunday, October 7th, 2012 at 4:43 pm. Filed under Family, Travel.

Wild Africa Trek is an 3 hour VIP tour at Disney?s Animal Kingdom on the Walt Disney World Resort property in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Best described as your own private Kilimanjaro Safari, it?s an amazing tour where guests get up close and personal with Animal Kingdom?s wild animals.

The tour costs about $200, is 3-hours long, and lunch is provided. Each Wild Africa Trek has two knowledgeable guides who are with you the entire time. One leads the group while the other takes photographs. While you?re on the tour, they take a ton of pictures, and you get a photo CD to take home.

Excursion guides take guests through the fictional East African village of Harambe and explore various parts of the Harambe Wildlife Reserve. The trek walks through a portion of the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail and embarks unto unexplored forests areas. Guests experience up-close views of hippopotamuses and Nile crocodiles, as well as cross rope bridges right above the animals.

After exiting the forests, guests board a safari vehicle unlike the open-sided trucks of Kilimanjaro Safaris. The vehicle travels through the Serengeti Savanna making frequent pull offs to allow guests to stand up and view the animals. The vehicle makes a stop at the safari camp in the middle of the Savanna outpost where guests are given an African inspired gourmet lunch (served in camp tins) prepared by Tusker House Restaurant chefs. Everything is edible, including the flower. It?s the perfect spot to watch the animals and pretend you?re really in Africa.

They only allow 10-12 people on a tour, so you feel very VIP. And with the ability to get up close and personal with the animals, Wild Africa Trek is a very unique and exclusive Disney experience.

This is a ?must-do? Disney experience which we highly recommend. This once-in-a-lifetime experience is well worth the cost. We actually enjoyed Wild Africa Trek so much that we are thinking about repeating this wonderful adventure the next time we visit Disney?s Animal Kingdom.
