USP announces 2012-2013 fellowships

Rockville, Md., September 27, 2012 ? Since the program's inception more than thirty years ago, USP has invested nearly $4 million in over 200 fellowship awards.

"Advances in science and technology often arise from the work of young researchers attempting to find cutting-edge solutions to problems," said Roger L. Williams, M.D., USP's chief executive officer. "Through our fellowship program, USP seeks to support innovative thinking and approaches to global challenges associated with medicine and food quality. The current awardees demonstrate the exemplary talent, dedication, and insight that will help meet these challenges."

USP is a nonprofit scientific organization that seeks to improve the health of people around the world through public standards and related programs that help ensure the quality, safety and benefit of medicines and foods. Each year, USP conducts a competitive process for selecting fellows who are engaged in full-time study in a Ph.D. or Pharm. D. program, medical school or dental school, and whose works are directly relevant to USP's priorities.

For the 2012-2013 academic year, three $50,000 USP Global Fellowship awards have been presented to the following students:

  • Darash Desai, Ph.D. candidate, Boston University, Department of Biomedical Engineering
Area of Research -- Counterfeit and substandard drug detector for the developing world. Current strategies to accurately screen for counterfeit and substandard medicines often require tests that are technically challenging and costly to employ in resource-limited countries in the developing world. Also, there is no chemical technology currently available that can provide a quantitative and accurate analysis of a drug's active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) content as well as profile its dissolution properties. Mr. Desai's research has helped to develop a screening platform based on a highly quantitative and sensitive microfluidic fluorescence system. This work has the potential to help support the development of an affordable and portable tool capable of determining API content in a drug as well as real-time release of the API from its tablet formulation.

  • Jose Napolitano, Ph.D., University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Pharmacy, Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy
Area of Research -- New generation of 1H NMR fingerprints for the rapid analysis of pharmacopeial reference standards. Dr. Napolitano's research involves the development of a method based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis of small organic molecules in a wide variety of materials, including pharmaceuticals, food ingredient, dietary supplement and botanicals. The basis of this approach is the use of 1H NMR spectroscopy and computer-aided spectral analysis to create 1H NMR "fingerprints" of substances of interest. 1H NMR allows for simultaneous evaluation of multiple components and can provide a large amount of structural information at the molecular level, making it a powerful approach for purity and stability studies. 1H NMR fingerprinting has broad potential for single instrument/measurement approaches to chemical identification and quantitation of complex materials such as food ingredients and botanicals.

  • Ting Wang, Ph.D. candidate, University of Maryland at Baltimore, School of Pharmacy
Area of Research -- Developing the scientific basis for the application of spectroscopic and chemometric methods to excipient identification and adulteration detection. USP is actively engaged in efforts to modernize its standards for small molecule drugs and excipients, in part, by replacing non-specific procedures for identification with more specific methods. Ms. Wang's work focuses on the use of spectroscopy and chemometric methods to characterize excipients. Used as raw materials in many drug products, excipients have a profound influence on their efficacy, stability and manufacturability. Excipient products can also be extremely variable among multiple suppliers, grades and even lots. Ms. Wang's research shows how the combination of spectroscopy and chemometric methods can be used as a rapid technique for identifying and evaluating the physio-chemical properties of these important raw materials in drug products.

Each of the Global Fellows will communicate regularly with a scientific liaison from USP headquarters in Rockville., Md., providing updates on his or her work and the relevance of its progress to USP's priorities. In addition, each fellow will be invited to give a poster presentation at a USP-sponsored meeting or event during the course of the academic year.

Ludworth Charl to stamp opposition in Bet on Your Mobile at Williamhill.com at Newcastle

Ludworth Charl?s last two acts at Newcastle were full of fascination. After bagging a comprehensive 3-length win, the white and blue dog continued his wonderful work to present an excellent show last time.

Despite going through a lot of mess in the beginning, the son of Ballymac Maeve kept himself in the front row. He eventually seized the second spot with ease, missing the top prize only by three quarters of a length.

After earning the favourite tag last twice, the skilful hound is likely to get the highest odds another time. The draw is not an issue for P. Rutherford?s trainee, who is due to start from the blue box.

There is nothing wrong with his rhythm, and only a fine start will be enough for him to establish dominance. Among his rivals are:

Auction House, Swift Whiskey, Midas Peppa, Hestias Lad and Birdie Man. The 480 metres flat race is going to begin at 12:12 GMT. The winning hound will leave the field with a handsome cash prize worth ?133.

Birdie Man has the draw in favour, but needs to dodge one or two bullets to seal the first place. Hestias Lad has a tradition of losing too much ground in the beginning. So, it would be a risky move to bet on him.

Swift Whiskey will start running from the fourth trap. Getting a clean run from this box is a difficult task for him. The brindle dog may not get the best of runs, but his chances will bright only in case of a clear ride.

Midas Peppa needs to freeze the rivals out of things right from the start. If he fails to take an early lead, his prospects will be no more than zero. Auction House is yet to make an impact at this level. His latest performance is still fresh in the mind, but trusting him blindly is not the way to any riches.

With Ludworth Charl in the pack, it is hard to look elsewhere for the champion. However, he needs to appear with a flawless effort to thrive. Good luck to all the hounds.

Arabs won't press Israel resolution at U.N. nuclear meet: diplomats

VIENNA (Reuters) - Arab states are expected to refrain from targeting Israel over its assumed nuclear arsenal at the U.N. atomic agency's annual conference next week so as not to undermine wider efforts for a nuclear weapons-free Middle East, diplomats said.

This would be welcomed by Western states, which have been concerned that an Arab move against Israel would discourage the Jewish state from attending talks due to be held this year on banning such weapons of mass destruction in the volatile region.

"It is certainly positive," one Western envoy said.

The diplomats said Arab countries would as usual criticize Israel in the debate but, like last year, not submit a joint resolution on the issue to the September 17-21 General Conference of the U.N.'s 155-nation International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Western powers had been urging Arab envoys accredited to the IAEA not to put forward a non-binding but symbolically important resolution singling out Israel, which is widely believed to possess the Middle East's only nuclear arsenal.

They said this would have dashed any hopes for a proposed conference late this year, probably in Helsinki, on creating a zone without nuclear arms in the Middle East. Israel, like its arch-adversary Iran, has yet to say whether it will take part.

In a surprise move at last year's IAEA gathering, the Arab group decided not to zero in on Israel with a resolution on "Israeli Nuclear Capabilities" in what was called a "goodwill gesture" ahead of the planned 2012 talks.

Israel welcomed this as a "positive" development, in a rare conciliatory exchange in an otherwise heated debate that underlined deep Arab-Israeli divisions on nuclear issues.

An Egyptian plan for an international meeting to lay the groundwork for the possible creation of a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction was agreed at a review conference on the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in 2010.

"THREATENING PEACE"

But the Western official organizing the conference, Finnish diplomat Jaakko Laajava, said in May he had yet to secure the needed attendance of all countries in the region. Even if it goes ahead, Western diplomats don't expect substantial progress any time soon due to deep-rooted regional animosities.

Israel's refusal to become party to the NPT or to place its nuclear installations under IAEA safeguards is "exposing the region to nuclear risks and threatening peace", Arab states said in a statement ahead of the General Conference.

Israel has drawn frequent Arab and Iranian condemnation over its presumed nuclear arsenal, and it is the only regional state not to belong to the NPT.

Israel and the United States regard Iran as the world's main proliferation threat, accusing Tehran of covertly seeking a nuclear arms capability, something the Islamic state denies.

Arab states scored a diplomatic victory in 2009 when IAEA members narrowly endorsed a resolution urging Israel to join the NPT and place all its atomic sites under agency supervision.

Brought up again in 2010 to keep up pressure on Israel, the resolution was defeated after a bruising diplomatic battle.

Israel has never confirmed or denied having nuclear weapons under a policy of ambiguity aimed at deterrence.

The Jewish state says it would only join the NPT after a comprehensive Middle East peace settlement. If it signed the 1970 NPT pact, it would have to renounce nuclear weaponry.

Google releases Course Builder, takes online learning down an opensource road

Google is well-known for projects with unexpected origins. It's almost natural, then, that the code Google used to build a web course has led to a full-fledged tool for online education. The open-source Course Builder project lets anyone make their own learning resources, complete with scheduled activities and lessons, if they've got some skill with HTML and JavaScript. There's also an avenue for live teaching or office hours: the obligatory Google+ tie-in lets educators announce Hangouts on Air sessions. Code is available immediately, although you won't need to be grading virtual papers to see the benefit. A handful of schools that include Stanford, UC San Diego and Indiana University are at least exploring the use of Course Builder in their own initiatives, which could lead to more elegant internet learning -- if also fewer excuses for slacking.

Math anxiety causes trouble for students as early as first grade

ScienceDaily (Sep. 12, 2012) ? Many high-achieving students experience math anxiety at a young age -- a problem that can follow them throughout their lives, new research at the University of Chicago shows.

In a study of first- and second-graders, Sian Beilock, professor in psychology, found that students report worry and fear about doing math as early as first grade. Most surprisingly math anxiety harmed the highest-achieving students, who typically have the most working memory, Beilock and her colleagues found.

"You can think of working memory as a kind of 'mental scratchpad' that allows us to 'work' with whatever information is temporarily flowing through consciousness," Beilock said. "It's especially important when we have to do a math problem and juggle numbers in our head. Working memory is one of the major building blocks of IQ."

Worries about math can disrupt working memory, which students could otherwise use to succeed. Beilock and other scholars have studied this impact of anxiety on working memory on older students, but her current work is the first to explore the impact on students as they begin school.

The findings are published on the website of the Journal of Cognition and Development. The lead author is UChicago PhD candidate Gerardo Ramirez. Joining he and Beilock in the work are UChicago postdoctoral scholar Elizabeth Gunderson and Susan Levine, the Stella M. Rowley Professor in Psychology.

The team showed that a high degree of math anxiety undermined performance of otherwise successful students, placing them almost half a school year behind their less anxious peers, in terms of math achievement.

Less talented students with lower working memory were not impacted by anxiety, because they developed simpler ways of dealing with mathematics problems, such as counting on their fingers. Ironically, because these lower-performing students didn't use working memory much to solve math problems, their performance didn't suffer when worried.

"Early math anxiety may lead to a snowball effect that exerts an increasing cost on math achievement by changing students' attitudes and motivational approaches towards math, increasing math avoidance, and ultimately reducing math competence," Beilock writes in the article.

For the study, the researchers tested 88 first-graders and 66 second-graders from a large urban school system. The students were tested to measure their academic abilities, their working memory and their fear of mathematics. They were asked, on a sliding scale, how nervous they felt to go to the front of the room and work on a mathematics problem on the board.

The study found that among the highest-achieving students, about half had medium to high math anxiety. Math anxiety was also common among low-achieving students, but it did not impact their performance.

Fortunately, there is hope for alleviating the negative impact of math anxiety on math achievement. "When anxiety is regulated or reframed, students often see a marked increase in their math performance," the researchers write. One way to reframe anxiety is to have students write about their worries regarding math ahead of time.

A procedure termed "expressive writing" helps students to download worries and minimizes anxiety's effects on working memory. The researchers speculate that, for younger students, expressive picture drawing, rather than writing, may also help lessen the burden of math anxiety. Teachers can also help students reframe their approach by helping them to see exams as a challenge rather than as a threat, the researchers write.

Beilock is also an author of "Math Anxiety, Who Has it, Why it Develops and How to Guard Against it," published in the current issue of Trends in Cognitive Science (Tics). The article, co-written with UChicago postdoctoral scholar Erin Maloney, points out that math anxiety has a variety of sources.

"Its development is probably tied to both social factors, such as a teachers' and parents' anxiety about their own math ability and a student's own numerical and spatial competencies," they write.

The research for the paper in the Journal of Cognition and Development was supported by the National Science Foundation Science of Learning Center Grant; a grant from the Spatial Intelligence and Learning Center to Beilock and Levine; by a NSF CAREER grant to Beilock; and by a National Center for Education Research Grant.

The research in the paper published in Trends in Cognitive Science (Tics) was supported by a U.S. Department of Education, Institute of Education Sciences Grant and a NSF CAREER Award to Beilock.

Beilock, the author of Choke, What the Secrets of the Brain Reveal about Getting it Right When you Have To, is one of the nation's leading experts on the power of anxiety to undermine performance across a wide variety of fields from test taking, to public speaking, to your golf score.

Pan Lover: Significantly less Right after - Supper Guilt: ten Decadent ...

2012_09_02-banana-split-dessert.jpegI have a shut friend who was just lately identified with pre-diabetes and higher cholesterol. She's not chubby, she workout routines a number of instances a week and was truly a vegetarian for properly about a ten years. Everyone, such as her medical professionals, was a little bit baffled. She shares my fairly fierce sweet tooth, so we sat down collectively very last week to brainstorm a several recipes that would help her start to rethink the way she prepares her favorite system of the day: dessert.

We made a decision not to go way too drastic for anxiety that she'd turn into discouraged, so we appeared at recipes that lower out egg yolks. We were the two similarly delighted to find a decadent treasure trove of incredible treats.

From sorbets and frozen yogurts to truffles, macarons, and pavlovas, you can find a full huge, broad entire world of yolk- free of charge, egg- cost-free, and vegan desserts out there that I began bookmarking. All of the recipes underneath don't claim to be body fat - cost-free or cholesterol cost-free necessarily. Some consist of quite a bit of cream even though others are practically unwanted fat - totally free. The place was to do some first discovering, and to get actually fired up about pudding, cake, fondue and sorbet. We succeeded.

Norway 2013 Oil Investments Adjusted Up To NOK204 Billion

The expected record investments in Norway's oil and gas sector in 2013 were adjusted up in the third quarter survey, official data showed Thursday.

The oil and gas investments in the country's lucrative offshore sector are expected to be 204 billion Norwegian kroner ($35 billion) in 2013, according to the third quarter survey, Statistics Norway said, the highest estimate since the agency started measuring oil investments in 1985.

The 2013 estimate was NOK9.8 billion higher than in the second quarter survey, the agency said.

Oil and gas investments in 2012 were adjusted slightly down to NOK184.9 billion.

The quarterly petroleum investment statistics are based on estimates submitted from oil and gas companies operating offshore Norway.

The biggest part of the investments is spent on maintaining output in currently producing fields, and is estimated at NOK96.9 billion, up from an estimate of NOK93.5 billion in the previous quarter.

The biggest investments are expected in giants such as the Statoil ASA (STO)-operated Troll and Oseberg, and the ConocoPhilips (COP)-operated Ekofisk, Statistics Norway said.

Investments in new fields are expected to total NOK62.1 billion in 2013, up from an estimate of NOK61 billion in the second quarter survey.

The most expensive new fields are the Eni SpA (E)-operated Barents Sea field Goliat, the ConocoPhilips-operated Eldfisk II, and the Lundin Petroleum AB (LUPE.SK)-operated Edvard Grieg field, the statistics agency said.

Investments in exploration in 2013 are estimated at NOK40.7 billion, up from the second quarter estimate of NOK35.4 billion.

Oil and gas companies plan a huge increase in the drilling of new production wells and exploration wells in 2013, expecting to spend NOK101.6 billion. This is a significant upward adjustment from the second quarter estimate of NOK93.6 billion.

"There is reason to believe that some wells planned to be drilled in 2013 will be postponed to 2014," Statistics Norway said, due to capacity constraints such as the lack of rigs.

Four new rigs have been added on the Norwegian continental shelf so far in 2012, and two new rigs are expected in early 2013, the agency said.

Several additional projects are expected to be approved by the summer of 2013, including Aasta Hansteen, Draupne and Dagny/Eirin. This will likely increase the 2013 investments even further from today's record levels, according to Statistics Norway.

South Africa: Small Farmers Can Spur Economic Growth

Cape Town ? Smallholder agriculture has potential not only to alleviate poverty in South Africa, but to spur general economic growth, a major conference on combating poverty and inequality has heard.

Given that South Africa's growth is lagging behind that of many smaller African economies, the potential of small farmers to help turn the country around has been a recurring theme in most sessions of the conference.

"While the place of agriculture and its contribution to the gross domestic product has declined over time, it remains an important sector of industry," said Mazibuko Jarra of the University of Cape Town's Law, Race and Gender Unit.

Independent researcher, Stephen Greenberg, added that agriculture and land reform are closely linked and that the lack of access to land has "decimated" small-scale agriculture in South Africa. This impacts on food security as people in rural areas rely on subsistence farming in the absence of economic alternatives.

Land reform, aimed at achieving the transfer of land from white to black farmers, has been a slow and expensive process in South Africa.

Ruth Hall of the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS), noted that the government's land reform policy was based on a "willing buyer, willing seller" principle, because it was perceived to be quicker and relatively cost effective.

Jarra said that while many commercial farmers are now willing to sell due to the economic climate, prices determined by the market are unreasonable. He argued for a re-examination of land expropriation within the context of the country's Constitution.

Greenberg echoed Ben Cousins, also of PLAAS, when drawing a distinction between ownership of and access to land by leasing for example.

Access to credit is a major stumbling block to small-scale farmers.

Greenberg noted that only three percent of the government-backed Land Bank's loan book goes to small farming operations, since policy and support focuses on large scale and corporate agriculture.

"Small scale and decentralised agro-processing is needed in South Africa but this is not possible without state intervention and a break with big industrial agriculture." Jarra added.

The large number of sessions addressing the interlinked issues of access to land, farming and agrarian reform is indicative of the complex and emotive nature of the debates at the conference.

The conference is entitled "Carnegie III: Strategies to Overcome Poverty and Inequality". Two earlier conferences and research programmes, looking at similar issues in the 1930 and 1980s, were funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

DIY News - Power Tools Becoming More Popular Over Hand Tools

Recent research and statistics in the field of do-it-yourself construction, repair and home improvement shows that power tools are miles ahead of manual hand tools when it comes to sales and usage by the general public.

Tweet This Recent research and statistics in the field of do-it-yourself construction, repair and home improvement shows that power tools are miles ahead of manual hand tools when it comes to sales and usage by the general public. In the United States alone, the sales of power trade tools is rising consistently at an average of 4.8 percent, and the peak trend is expected to continue until 2016. In other countires where DIY enthusiasts abound even more, such as Australia, the rise of automated tools is evidently more widespread.

More and more people decide to use automated discount tools partly because of the rise of demand in independent construction projects. For example, if a person or family wants to have their house undergo a major reconstruction, they feel they would save more on construction costs if they do the process themselves instead of hiring a third party contractor. Instead of hiring many people to do the task, the family can team up together and use air tools instead to make the workload easier.

By 2016, the power tools industry is expected to become a $13.1 billion dollar industry, the highest it will ever be since 2006, when the tool industry experienced some slight drawbacks. In the United States, many tool suppliers are offering more power equipment because a lot of the clients who left their homes during the recession are now rebounding and embarking into housing projects again.

In Australia, however, the rising costs of house construction expenses in Sydney are forcing residents to choose power tools. This would enable them to remodel their homes without spending too much on hiring a construction team. As one of the most expensive places in the world when it comes to living expenses, families in Sydney are benefitting from do-it-yourself construction and repair.

Meanwhile, hand tools are seen to continue lagging behind hand tools for the upcoming years. It is obvious that people nowadays are choosing more convenience and efficiency when working with tools. Price is only a secondary factor in these kinds of situations.

HiFashion: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer is a cause that's close to my heart (I once organised a charity event for the issue, which is still one of my proudest moments) and if you don't already know: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Every year, I'm ?more and more impressed at all the brands that get involved, mainly be designing specific 'Pink products' for charity and then donating a certain percentage.

Yesterday, I had a look at two big brands who've put together products for Breast Cancer Awareness Month: UGG Australia and Chamilia.

UGG Australia:
With winter around our corner, it's time to get our favourite guilty pleasure - The UGG - out (don't deny it, we all have a pair...or two). The brand has teamed up with The Haven, who offer?counselling?for those diagnosed with Breast Cancer and to their families. They've designed two shoes, each embroidered with a pink ribbon, and are available both in?their stores and online.

The Classic Short retails at ?165, and the Ansley at ?80, with ?10 for every sale going to The Haven. The boots look pretty cute in pink and contains the warm and soft sheepskin that UGG Australia have perfected.

We were treated to afternoon tea and then were spoken through what The Haven does. Basically, the charity supports those diagnosed via a range of therapies to help people mentally and physically deal with the effects of Breast Cancer, at their specialist day centres. They do some great work in helping people deal with what's going on and provide tailor made therapies to suit each person's needs.

UGG Australia will also be holding a range of in store events throughout October, so keep an eye open for those! We were also each given a gorgeous pink bouquet of flowers, handmade from The Real Flower Company. The flowers smelt so gorgeous and were made really well.?

Chamilia:

Chamilia have teamed up with Breast Cancer Care to produce a one-off pink bracelet and charm, again with proceeds going to charity. For those that don't know, Chamilia are known for their charm bracelets, mainly in silver, and they sell a wide variety of charms and beads. They also do a lot of pretty earrings and necklaces. It's great as you're able to design your own as well, by mixing and matching beads.
For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Chamilia will release a gorgeous pink leather rope bracelet, with a pink bead. Then you're also able to separately buy a hanging pink ribbon, made from Silver and Swarovski Elements, so you can support the cause in a stylish way too.
Also LFW is a mere week away now! It's getting busy and The Body Shop are once again the official make-up sponsor for Vauxhall Fashion Scout - the event for new designers during Fashion Week. They are giving away the incredible chance to be front row at a Vauxhall Fashion Scout show, with ?100 travel included, as well as being able to meet make up artist, Lan Nguyen, and winning a ?100 goody bag. What a prize, right!

Entering is easy. All you have to do is create a Pinterest board on your Spring/Summer13 inspirations are, be it ice cream or something pretty. You'll have to re-pin the image from their SS13 board, so they know you've entered and don't forget to use #SS13TBS. Winners will be picked on the 10th September by Nguyen.

What do you think of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month products? Let me know if you know any other brands taking part too!

HTC holding U.S. event on Sept. 19, new devices likely

Android Central

It's fall refresh time, and it looks like HTC's getting geared up to unleash an arsenal of new products in just a couple of weeks time. This afternoon we received the 'save the date' reminder above, inviting us to an event in New York City on Sept. 19. For those keeping track of all the events and announcements we're expecting around that time, that's 24 hours after Moto and Intel strut their stuff in London, and just a couple of days ahead of the expected iPhone 5 retail release. (Yeah, it's going to be a crazy few weeks.)

What's particularly interesting is that our sister site WPCentral also received the same invite, suggesting that HTC might unveil not only new Android devices, but some Windows Phone 8 stuff, too. The WPC kids have been been hearing rumors of a possible HTC "Accord" or "8X" over the past few days, so we'll have to see if that materializes on the 19th.

On the Android side, possibilities include that weird iMac-looking tablet thing, as well as the perpetually-rumored Verizon-bound 1080p-screened 5-inch device. Any more wild theories? Throw 'em out in the comments. Both Android Central and WPCentral will be live from New York City on the 19th to bring you live coverage of whatever HTC's got up its sleeve.

CyanogenMod tops up CM10 Jelly Bean jar with SMS pop-up, quick reply features

DNP Cyanogen popup

On top of bringing Android flavors to devices that would otherwise never get them, CyanogenMod has added SMS options to its latest CM10 Jelly Bean ROM -- features the stock version lacks. First, the team introduced QuickMessage, which displays a pop-up when you get an IM, allowing you to view or reply to it on the spot. Then, after hearing feedback from users, a "quick reply" option was appended as well, letting you disable the pop-up and reply from the notification bar instead. We took a quick whirl with the latest nightly and saw that it works as advertised, giving you the speedy options while appearing as a regular setting in the stock messaging app. So, if you're like most of us and drop everything when you get a text, check the source links for more details.
