(AP) ? A church built entirely of ice and snow has opened in Bavaria ? a century after villagers first built a snow church in an act of protest.

The church at Mitterfirmiansreut, near the Czech border, is more than 20 meters (65 feet) in length and boasts a tower. It's made up of some 1,400 cubic meters (49,000 cubic feet) of snow.

The structure was bathed in blue light as it opened Wednesday evening with a blessing from Dean Kajetan Steinbeisser.

But when the ancestors of today's villagers built the first snow church in 1911, they weren't thinking just of architectural achievement.

Steinbeisser says: "It was meant as an act of provocation ? believers from the village got together and built a snow church because they didn't have a church here."

GSM phones vulnerable to hijack scams: researcher (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? Flaws in a widely used wireless technology could allow hackers to gain remote control of phones and instruct them to send text messages or make calls, according to an expert on mobile phone security.

They could use the vulnerability in the GSM technology -- which is used by most telecom operators globally and by billions of people -- to make calls or send texts to expensive, premium phone and messaging services in scams, said Karsten Nohl, head of Berlin-based Security Research Labs.

Nohl is a well-regarded expert on mobile security who last year identified a bug in GSM technology that makes calls vulnerable to tapping. He says he is calling attention to these flaws to pressure the industry into beefing up the security of their products.

Mobile security is a hot issue because hackers are paying unprecedented attention to the devices as smartphone sales have outpaced sales of PCs.

Only a few flaws have been found in GSM technology - which stands for Global System for Mobile Communications - over its 20-year history. Industry lobby group GSMA said on Tuesday it did not expect the new findings to affect its views on the security of the technology.

"The GSMA and its mobile network operator members are confident in the security of existing 2G GSM networks and real attacks on real networks against real customers are most unlikely," it said in a statement, adding that newer technologies are safer and not impacted by the new research.

GSMA's statement "on anticipated GSM security announcements" did not make clear whether the industry group had actually seen Nohl's latest research.

Security experts have previously identified a small number of viruses designed to infect smartphones, allowing hackers to take control of the devices and force them to make calls or send text messages. But Nohl said he has discovered a way to leverage previously disclosed vulnerabilities in GSM technology that could potentially threaten hundreds of thousands of phones.

"We can do it to hundreds of thousands of phones in a short time frame," Nohl told Reuters ahead of a presentation on the topic at a hacking convention in Berlin on Tuesday.

SECTOR IN FOCUS

Smartphone malware is popping up at an unprecedented rate as people put more and more valuable information on the devices, using them to hold corporate secrets, conduct banking and function as digital wallets.

GSM became the dominant mobile technology globally in the late 1990s and even though new, faster mobile networks have been rolled out across the world, operators have stuck to their GSM networks to support older phones and to offer service when new networks fail.

The Berlin convention takes place just days after U.S. security think tank Strategic Forecasting Inc (Stratfor) said its website had been hacked and that some names of corporate subscribers had been made public. Activist hacker group Anonymous claimed responsibility.

Attacks on corporate landline phone systems are fairly common, often involving bogus premium-service phone lines that hackers set up in countries in Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia.

Fraudsters make calls to the numbers from hacked business phone systems or mobile phones, then collect their cash and move on before the activity is identified.

The phone users typically do not realize the problem until after they receive their bills, and telecommunications carriers often end up footing at least some of the costs.

Even though Nohl will not present all details of possible attacks at the conference, he said hackers will usually replicate the code needed for attacks within a few weeks.

T-MOBILE, SFR LEAD NEW RANKING

Mobile networks of Germany's T-Mobile and France's SFR offer their clients the best protection against online criminals wanting to intercept their calls or track their movements, according to a new ranking Nohl will unveil at his presentation.

The new ranking, at gsmmap.org, is conducted by security researchers, who hope this will heighten the awareness of operators and consumers on the vulnerability of their mobile communications.

Researchers reviewed 32 operators in 11 countries and rated their performance based on how easy it was for them to intercept the calls, impersonate someone's device or track the device.

"None of the networks protects users very well," Nohl said.

The sample is set to grow from 32 carriers dramatically next year as the tool enables anyone to participate in data gathering

by downloading measuring software to their phones.

Nohl said mobile telecom operators could easily improve their clients' security, in many cases by just updating their software.

Researchers reviewed operators in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Morocco, Slovakia, Switzerland and Thailand.

Boehner surrenders in tax showdown (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Congress, after months of bitter fighting, is poised on Friday to pass a payroll tax cut extension that President Barack Obama argues is vital to the health of the economy.

The legislation would continue for two months a 4.2 percent payroll tax rate that otherwise would expire on December 31 and ratchet up to 6.2 percent for 160 million American workers.

"I congratulate members of Congress for ending the partisan stalemate," said Obama.

House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner yielded to pressure from Democrats and his party and agreed, with minor changes, to allow a vote on a bill passed by the Senate last week with bipartisan support.

Boehner acknowledged the opposition that he faced in initially opposing the measure.

"It may not have been politically the smartest thing in the world," Boehner told reporters late on Thursday. But he said his fellow House Republicans "waged a good fight."

Obama said: "Because of this agreement, every working American will keep his or her tax cut - about $1,000 for the average family" over the course of a year.

The two-month deal between Democrats and Republicans in the Senate and House comes after they were unable to agree on ways to offset the costs of a full-year extension.

If both chambers approve the two-month extension on Friday, a new round of negotiations would begin in January to add 10 more months to the measure.

Some last-minute roadblocks could still occur. If any member of Congress objects to a fast vote on Friday, passage of the two-month extension would be delayed, probably until next week.

It was unclear whether any restive conservative Republicans in the House might object to a voice vote, forcing Boehner to schedule a roll-call vote in coming days.

But either way, the legislation is expected to eventually be approved by Congress and sent to Obama to sign into law before the December 31 deadline.

Last Saturday, the Senate approved the two-month extension in a strong, bipartisan vote. But House conservatives, challenging Boehner, said they would not go along. Instead, they pushed for a year-long extension, despite earlier opposition to any renewal of the payroll tax cut.

Their maneuvers led some Democrats to suspect that Republicans were simply trying to kill the measure.

House Republicans all week insisted on a 12-month payroll tax extension. But Democrats did not budge, arguing that the two-month compromise hammered out in the Senate must first be approved to ensure no lapse in the lower rate. Then, they said, negotiations could continue.

But with opposition to the House Republicans mounting every day - from Senate Republicans lawmakers to conservative commentators and outside political advisors, Boehner saw no alternative but to relent.

Besides extending the payroll tax cut for two months, the legislation also temporarily continues some unemployment benefits that were set to expire in coming weeks and avoids a cut in payments to doctors who treat elderly patients in the government-backed Medicare health insurance program.

In one victory for Republicans, the legislation has a provision aimed at forcing a quick decision by Obama on the Keystone XL pipeline project that would run from Canada to the Texas coast.

Astronomers discover planets that survived their star's expansion

ScienceDaily (Dec. 21, 2011) ? Astronomers have discovered two Earth-sized planets that survived getting caught in the red-giant expansion of their host star.

Steve Kawaler, an Iowa State University professor of physics and astronomy and a leader of the Kepler Asteroseismic Investigation, helped the research team study data from the Kepler space telescope to confirm that tiny variations of light from a star were actually caused by two planets of that star.

The findings are published in the Letters section of the Dec. 22 edition of the journal Nature. St?phane Charpinet of the Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Plan?tologie in Toulouse, France, is the lead author and leader of the research team.

"This is a snapshot of what our solar system might look like after several billion more years of evolution," Kawaler said. "This can help us learn about the future of planetary systems and of our own sun."

Kawaler said the researchers have studied pulsations of the planets' host star (KIC 05807616, an old star just past its red-giant state and with an exposed core) for about two years. While analyzing the data, Charpinet noticed two tiny variations repeated in 5.76 and 8.23 hour intervals.

He asked other astronomers -- including Kawaler -- to analyze the original Kepler data and a subsequent set of data to see if they could also see the variations.

"We saw them in the same place and the same periodicity," Kawaler said. "So we knew they were real."

That led to the next question: "So what are they?"

Kawaler, working 26 years ago with the late Carl Hansen of the University of Colorado, had studied the fastest, and slowest, rates that stars could pulsate. Using that result, the team could conclude the variations seen by Kepler were too slow to be caused by the star itself. And so the astronomers started testing the idea that the variations were from two planets orbiting the star.

Astronomers believe the variations from the two planets -- KOI 55.01 and KOI 55.02 -- are caused by reflection of the star's light on the planets and by differences in thermal emissions from the hot day-sides and cooler night-sides of the planets.

The astronomers also report the two planets are 76 percent and 87 percent the size of Earth. That makes them among the smallest planets detected around a star other than our sun.

They further report the planets are very close to their host star, only .6 percent and .76 percent the distance between the sun and Earth. That means conditions on the planets are very harsh with temperatures up to 16,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

That's so close the host star's expansion as a red giant would have engulfed the planets, possibly stripping gaseous giants similar to Jupiter down to their dense cores. The planets also could have contributed to the host star's unusual loss of mass.

The research team said the discovery of the two planets raises many questions about their ability to survive such harsh conditions. It also raises questions about how planets can affect the evolution of their host stars.

Kawaler said NASA's Kepler Mission, launched in March 2009, is a tremendous tool for studying stars and planets. So much so, astronomers are working to extend the Kepler Mission another four years, from 2012 into 2016.

Kepler's primary job is to detect tiny variations in the brightness of the stars within its view to find Earth-like planets that might be able to support life.

The Kepler Asteroseismic Investigation is also using Kepler data to study different kinds of stars. The investigation is led by a four-member steering committee: Kawaler, Chair Ron Gilliland of the Space Telescope Science Institute based in Baltimore, Jorgen Christensen-Dalsgaard and Hans Kjeldsen, both of Aarhus University in Denmark.

Wisconsin assistant Paul Chryst to coach at Pitt

Published: Thursday, December 22, 2011 at 6:08 p.m.
Last Modified: Thursday, December 22, 2011 at 6:08 p.m.

PITTSBURGH - Paul Chryst turned Wisconsin's historically ho-hum offense into a high-powered attack that lit up scoreboards across the Big Ten.

Pittsburgh would love to see him do the same with the Panthers, but only after he provides the beleaguered program with some much-needed stability.

The school hired Chryst on Thursday to replace Todd Graham, who bolted for Arizona State last week after less than a year on the job.

The 46-year-old Chryst is Pitt's fourth head coach in the last 13 months, following Dave Wannstedt, Mike Haywood and Graham, who left for the Sun Devils following a disappointing 6-6 season.

Pitt is hoping Chryst, who spent seven seasons as offensive coordinator at his alma mater, sticks around much longer. In addition to the seemingly endless coaching chaos, the Panthers are leaving the Big East for the ACC by 2014.

"We believed it was important to find a leader who gets the very best from his players while also developing the kind of culture that fits the University of Pittsburgh," Pittsburgh athletic director Steve Pederson said. "Paul Chryst is that leader."

Chryst molded No. 9 Wisconsin (11-2) into an offensive powerhouse since joining the program in 2005, and may have done his best job this season. The Badgers ranked fourth in the nation in scoring, averaging 44.6 points while winning the Big Ten championship and earning a Rose Bowl berth.

It's uncertain whether Chryst will stay on at Wisconsin through the bowl game or join his new team immediately. Pitt plays SMU in the BBVA Compass Bowl on Jan. 7, with Keith Patterson serving as interim coach.

When he starts hardly mattered to Chryst on Thursday as he met with his new players and toured the team's practice facility with his family.

"Pitt and Pittsburgh are absolutely the right fit for us, and we're looking forward to getting immersed in our new hometown," Chryst said. "We are committed to building a program on and off the field that will make people proud."

Words of comfort to a fan base still reeling from Graham's graceless departure after 338 days at the helm. Graham resigned suddenly a week ago when Pitt denied him permission to talk to Arizona State, alerting his players via forwarded text message of his decision to leave.

The Panthers lashed out at Graham in the aftermath, with wide receiver Devin Street calling his former coach a "liar" through his Twitter feed.

There appear to be no such issues with Chryst, with Street tweeting he'd be "very" happy if Chryst brought his offensive fireworks to Pitt.

Chryst will be introduced on Thursday afternoon, ending an eight-day search for Graham's replacement. Contract terms were not immediately available, but he beat out Florida International coach Mario Cristobal and interim Ohio State coach Luke Fickell for the job.

It's one the Panthers hope Chryst will hold onto as the school prepares to join Syracuse in leaving the Big East for the ACC sometime in the next three seasons.

Graham said repeatedly over the last 11 months he was looking forward to the challenge, constantly preaching character, commitment and a "high octane" offense designed to take the Big East by storm.

It never happened as the Panthers struggled adapting from Wannstedt's pro-style approach to Graham's modified spread attack. Pitt allowed 57 sacks this season, easily the most in the FBS, and Graham drew the ire of the fan base for shifting blame from himself to quarterback Tino Sunseri.

The growing pains led to a wildly uneven season in which the Panthers let winnable games slip away. Pitt held double-digit second-half leads over Iowa, Cincinnati and rival West Virginia only to collapse in the final minutes.

There have been so such issues for the Badgers with Chryst calling the plays.

Chryst anchored the offense around massive offensive line that churned out 1,000-yard rushers with regularity, but also showed an ability to adapt.

When former N.C. State quarterback Russell Wilson transferred in this fall, Chryst didn't hesitate to let Wilson go to work. The senior finished second in the country in pass efficiency while throwing for 31 touchdowns and just three interceptions. The running game was its usual self as Montee Ball rushed for 1,759 yards and 32 touchdowns while becoming a Heisman Trophy finalist.

Graham didn't leave the cupboard completely bare. Running back Ray Graham was among the nation's leaders in rushing yards before tearing the ACL in his right knee in October, ending his season. He is expected to return for his senior season, and if he's healthy he will give Chryst the kind of dynamic threat out of the backfield that was a fixture during Chryst's days at Wisconsin.

Chryst's first job, however, will be selling the Panthers that he's in it for the long haul.

"The bar is set high in the 'City of Champions' and that is incredibly exciting and inspiring," Chryst said. "I can't wait to meet our players and get to work."

Bill Conlin of Philadelphia Daily News accused of child molestation

Bill Conlin was accused of molesting three girls and a boy in the 1970s. Conlin is a?veteran sportswriter and columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News.

A veteran sportswriter and columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News was accused in a newspaper report Tuesday of molesting three girls and a boy in the 1970s, including his niece, who is now a prosecutor.

Authorities said no criminal charges would be pursued against?Bill?Conlin?because the allegations of abuse happened too long ago.

Conlin, a Hall of Fame baseball writer and author, retired just ahead of the story's publication online by The Philadelphia Inquirer, his former editor said.?Conlin's?lawyer said his client would not comment about the story?but would fight the claims.

"Mr.?Conlin?is obviously floored by these allegations which supposedly happened 40 years ago. He's engaged me to do everything possible to bring the facts forward to vindicate his name," said attorney George Bochetto.

The newspaper reported that the four accusers claim?Conlin?groped and fondled them in the 1970s, when they were ages 7 to 12.

Kelley Blanchet, a niece of?Conlin's?who is now a prosecutor in Atlantic City, N.J., and others told the newspaper they were speaking out in part because of the child sex abuse allegations being faced by Jerry Sandusky, a former Penn State University assistant football coach. Like in the Sandusky case, people aware of the allegations involving?Conlin?years ago did not go to police, the newspaper said.

"This is a tragedy," Blanchet said. "People have kept his secret. It's not just the victims, it's the victims' families. There were so many people who knew about this and did nothing."

Prosecutors in Gloucester County, N.J., took videotaped statements from the four accusers last year but said no charges would be pursued because assaults that occurred before 1996 fall under the statute of limitations. The alleged victims said they also came forward to highlight the shortcomings of those time limits.

Conlin?had worked at the newspaper for more than four decades, starting in 1965 and becoming the beat writer for the Phillies the next year. He held that job for 21 years and became a columnist in 1987. He also was a commentator on the ESPN program "The Sports Reporters" and wrote two baseball-related books, the "Rutledge Book of Baseball" and "Batting Cleanup,?Bill?Conlin."

He received the 2011 J.G. Taylor Spink Award presented at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., and is honored in the hall's "Scribes and Mikemen" exhibit. The Baseball Writers' Association of America said the allegations would not affect his award.

Daily News editor Larry Platt, speaking at a news conference, said he accepted?Conlin's?offer to retire by phone on Tuesday afternoon. Platt would only characterize the conversation as "painful."

Platt said he didn't know about the allegations until Tuesday. He described the emotions in the newsroom as "overwhelmingly a sense of shock, a sense of outrage, a sense of sadness."

The Daily News and Inquirer are owned by the same company, Philadelphia Media Network, and operate out of the same building downtown but compete on stories. Inquirer editor Stan Wischnowski said at the news conference the story had been in the works for about a month.

In one recent column titled "Tough Guys Are Talking About Sandusky,"?Conlin?questioned people who say they would have intervened had they witnessed child sex abuse.

"Everybody says he will do the right thing, get involved, put his own ass on the line before or after the fact. But the moment itself has a cruel way of suspending our fearless intentions," he wrote.

FAMU drum major's death ruled a homicide

By msnbc.com staff and NBC News

The drum major of Florida A&M University's famous marching band died of hazing, according to authorities who ruled his death a homicide Friday.

Robert Champion, 26, of Decatur, Ga., died Nov. 19 after a football game in Orlando, Fla.?The Orange County Medical Examiner's office said in a report obtained Friday by NBC News that Champion died of "blunt force trauma sustained during a hazing incident."

From the beginning, authorities suspected that hazing was involved in Champion's death. Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said at the time that criminal charges were possible.

Julian White, the band's longtime director, was fired four days later for what the university said was his inability to stop hazing in the band and the music department.

FAMU has a history of problems with hazing:

  • In 2001, a band member was hospitalized because of hazing.?
  • In 2006, fraternity brothers stood trial for alleged hazing.?
  • Earlier this year, the school confirmed that as many as 30 band members were released because of their involvement in hazing.
  • In October, police arrested three band members on charges that they beat a female band member so severely during hazing rituals that they broke her thigh.

Another person claims hazing by Florida A&M band

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said this week that its investigation of Champion's death had uncovered possible employee fraud and misconduct. An FDLE spokesman wouldn't discuss details of the investigation, but he told NBC station WESH of Orlando that it will now be handled separately from the criminal investigation of Champion's death.?

Writer Christopher Hitchens loses his battle with cancer

Christopher Hitchens

Christopher Hitchens died Thursday of pneumonia, a complication of the esophageal cancer he was diagnosed with in 2010. He was 62.

A prolific writer on everything from atheism to politics to the British royal family, Hitchens was known for his unflinching prose and often unpopular opinions which created a great deal of debate amongst his readers in Vanity Fair, where he had been a contributing editor since 1992.

"Christopher Hitchens was a wit, a charmer and a troublemaker, and to those who knew him well, he was a gift from, dare I say it, God. He died today at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, in Houston, after a punishing battle with esophageal cancer, the same disease that killed his father," confirmed Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter.

"There will never be another like Christopher. A man of ferocious intellect, who was as vibrant on the page as he was at the bar. Those who read him felt they knew him, and those who knew him were profoundly fortunate souls."

"To his friends, Christopher will be remembered for his elevated but inclusive humor and for a staggering, almost punishing memory that held up under the most liquid of late-night conditions. And to all of us, his readers, Christopher Hitchens will be remembered for the millions of words he left behind. They are his legacy. And, God love him, it was his will," Carter wrote.

Hitchens kept up his writing duties after his dire diagnosis, refusing to back down from his anti-religion stance even in the face of his own mortality.

"So far, I have decided to take whatever my disease can throw at me, and to stay combative even while taking the measure of my inevitable decline. I repeat, this is no more than what a healthy person has to do in slower motion," he wrote in his final column for Vanity Fair, which can be read in the January 2012 issue. "It is our common fate. In either case, though, one can dispense with facile maxims that don't live up to their apparent billing."

Christopher Hitchens is survived by his wife Carol Blue and three children, Alexander, Sophia and Antonia.

Make Siri Change Your iPhone 4S Settings, Read Battery Level [Ios Downloads]

Make Siri Change Your iPhone 4S Settings, Read Battery LeveliPhone 4S (Jailbroken): The voice-assistant Siri is pretty useful on the iPhone 4S, but there are a lot of things you still can't do with it. But this Cydia tweak will cross a few items off that list, including turning on or off wireless settings, setting your screen brightness and reading your battery level back to you.

What's interesting is the way that the developer set up these features. Instead of going to a third-party server to enable it, he can just use a framework to keep these commands local to your phone, which is a plus for privacy reasons. You'll have to jailbreak your phone, just like with all other Cydia tweaks, but if you've already done it, this is a pretty cool addition.

Mystery of the male ostrich's erection solved

Getting an erection is no problem for male ostriches ? but maintaining it for more than a few seconds is a different matter. The birds may have inherited their underpowered genitalia from their dinosaur ancestors.

The penis is a vital piece of equipment for many vertebrates. Most male reptiles and mammals have them, and two of the most ancient groups of birds have them too, suggesting that dinosaurs, from which birds have descended, also possessed the male member. The majority of male birds don't have one, though: the reason why is something of a mystery.

The ostrich belongs to one of those two ancient, penis-bearing bird groups. It is a palaeognath, a group that also includes emus, kiwis and the near-flightless tinamous. The other endowed group is the Galloanserae, commonly known as fowl, which includes chickens, pheasants and ducksMovie Camera.

Many of these birds' penises are well understood, but the penises of ostriches and their relatives remained a mystery. So Richard Prum of Yale University and Patricia Brennan, now at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, obtained a dead ostrich and three emus to find out more.

Fast action

In both species they found spongy organs called paralymphatic bodies at the base of the penis. That tells us that the birds' penises fill up with lymphatic fluid to make an erection, like all other bird penises studied ? and unlike reptiles and mammals, which use blood for the job.

That is bizarre, Brennan says, because the body keeps lymphatic fluid under lower pressure than blood. As a result, birds can't maintain an erection. "Copulation is very brief compared with mammals and reptiles," Brennan says. "It's a matter of a few seconds."

Brennan says she doesn't know why such an inefficient system would evolve, especially as it must have evolved from the more evolutionarily ancient blood-based system. However, all birds with penises produce erections this way, so the condition must already have existed in the last common ancestor of modern birds.

That last common ancestor was alive in the early Cretaceous, at least 130 million years ago. It is not clear now much further back down the bird evolutionary tree these inefficient penises might be found, but it is at least possible that the trait first appeared in the dinosaurs from which birds evolved.

Gregory Erickson of Florida State University in Tallahassee says it makes sense that dinosaurs had penises, but so far the fossil record has remained silent on the matter. It would take a dinosaur fossil with exceptional soft tissue presentation to establish whether dinosaur sex was as brief as the birds' or as leisurely as mammal and reptile couplings.

A dinosaur penis would be far from the oldest in the fossil record, though: that crown is currently held by a tiny crustacean found in rocks 425 million years old.

Caterpillar sells part of Bucyrus business | Manufacturing | Crain's ...

(AP) ? Caterpillar Inc. said Malaysian conglomerate Sime Darby is paying $360 million for part of the former Bucyrus distribution business, which Caterpillar acquired through its $7.6-billion acquisition of the surface mining equipment maker last year.

Sime Darby, one of the world's largest palm oil companies, is also a Caterpillar dealer in Asia. The purchase includes the Sime Darby Industrial Cat dealerships in Australia and other countries.

Caterpillar, the world's largest construction and mining equipment maker, said the Bucyrus deal is the first of several that it expects to make. It wants to transition product distribution and support of Bucyrus machinery to Cat dealers that supply mining companies around the world.

As part of the acquisition, which was announced late Tuesday, about 400 former Bucyrus employees are expected to move to Sime Darby's Australian subsidiary Hastings Deering.

The Peoria company also said it expects to start selling former Bucyrus mining products through Sime Darby's other Cat dealerships, although that wasn't part of Tuesday's deal.
